Clutch doesn't engage until bike gets hot

2007 ktm 250sxf has 17 hours bought it used. When its first cranked and you try putting it in gear it jumps foward and cuts off with the clutch pulled in. Once the bike gets hot the clutch seems to work good.I went ahead and changed the oil and the screen on bottom had a couple of pieces of metal.

This is the same with all 4 strokes. they all need to heat up before you can ride them, but this is not a problem.

Hi! Please try adjusting your clutch cable Or if fluid operated bleed the system if still the same adjust the push rod that opens the clutch assembly.
If you have a cable operated clutch adjust it so when you pull the lever you want 3/4mm gap before the tension starts the bite/operation of your clutch.(If it starts slipping under load back off a couple mm)
It is quite normal for a little swarf (Small bits/metal) to be in clutch case but only a small amount.
This should do the trick!
Good luck and Merry Christmas from Paul 'W'

What type of clutch oil do I use for my 2006 ktm 250sxf

Do you mean brake fluid for clutch pump or oil for the engine?
If you ask about oil for engine KTM recomend Motorex Power Synt 4T 10W-50.
If you ask about the clutch brake fluid you will need brake fluid DOT 4 or DOT 5.1. See link: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/90432/Ktm-250-Sx-F.html?page=36

Will not shift into first gear

Sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment, or needs to be bled. Most of the ktm's use a Magura hydraulic clutch which can be bled using Mineral Oil. DO NOT USE BRAKE FLUID.

Clutch does not engage well, especially when cold. First shift into gear will always stall motor.

to me this seems a case of many things not 100% set up properly.

big singles do burn a lot of oil, so either its low or just the wrong viscosity, check with a KTM forum as a lot of users will have already had this problem and rectified it.

but the first thing i'd check first is: Idle speed (if its FI then shouldnt be a problem) valve clearances and it also depends on whether you have any mods?

a race spec pipe will always cause issues starting cold.

Have a 2006 ktm 250 sxf seized rod to the crank got it changed reinstalled put motor back together now can not even kick it like somthing is stuck. Toke the clutch basket out, timing gear and water pump...

Your clutch basket is the link between the engine and transmission. Your kick starter rotates the clutch basket gear, which turns another gear at the engine crank. Remove either the basket or gear at the crank and see if the engine, and the transmission both turn. Sounds like the engine is stuck for some reason. At least you can cut the issue in half.

I just bought a 2008 ktm 105 and i can start it okay but when i pull in my clutch and push down on the shifter for gear 1 the bike shuts off.

Sounds like the clutch is not engaging. Check the clutch cable. Can you roll the bike then put in gear while it is rolling and it go? I would say adjust the clutch. Screw the adjustment out. Or unscrew the adjustment. Which is under a little black rubber boot on the clutch handle.

With the bike in gear and the clutch engage, the

Clutch discs are stuck, put the bike in gear, not running, pull in the clutch and push the bike back and forth to break the clutches loose. Once they break loose start the engine put the bike in gear, hold the front brake, and slip the clutch a little to remove any built up or stuck crud on the plates.

Bike wants to move when in gear and clutch is pulled in

Your clutch is not fully engaged. You should have adjustment not only at the clutch lever but where the cable terminates at the crank case. In order to fix this, screw the adjustment at the lever out to get the desired result. Adjust a bit then try the bike and see if you have moved it enough. Whenever you get the desired result, tighten the set nut on the adjustment.
