Question about 2007 BMW R 1200 RT

1 Answer

Engine noise at idle speed

I have a 2005 BMW R1200RT. The idle speed is not very smooth, and now the lefthand side of the engine has developed a metallic tinkering sound which appears to disapear when the engine speed is increased.

Can any one help.

Sounds like it's time to adjust the valves. The noise you are likely hearing is due to valve train noise. I suspect you have loose valves. Also I would recommend making sure the carburetors are synchronized. If one side is off you will actually feel a roughness in the motor especially at idle.
When you remove the valve covers be sure to look for any dryness in the valve train. You want to make sure you're not having an oiling problem.
You'd be well off to just do a major tune up. Be sure to replace the spark plugs too.

Hi, Shaffer for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. BMW R1200RT bike - gears will suddenly not shift properly and lock in 4th and it becomes impossible to change downwards, then suddenly it will work but keeps sticking or simply refusing the change in gear

Hi Gerryberet and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch dragging slightly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. Shift lever is loose on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.
