I can confirm the fault is with the nylon bush lifting in the gear lever housing at the base of the gear lever. The dealer has yet to replace mine, however I have carried out a very temorary repair by fitting a cable tie around the circumference of the housing. lift the gaitor from around the gear lever to access. I have not had a problem since. This car is a driving school car and obviously does a lot of gear changes. If the parts are changed but no modification is carried out I am sure the fault will re occur, however at least I know the fault and can overcome it.

hey johnhoile,
Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.
If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

Suggest you get the TCU codes read (Jaguar dealer or well equipped auto box specialist). Suggest you don't go component changing without a believable diagnosis, could be TCU, could be pressure or speed/load sensors, lots of things, many not as expensive as a new TCU!
