Hi barhulin

Firstly, some types of after market filters are designed to be run with oil impregnation.

It is a foam Uni Pod type filter designed to be run soaked in oil.
we have a 1997 savage - 1beea6a.jpg

If it is a paper type Pod, then some of these type can be run with the correct filter oil. I use an aerosol spray oil here in Australia to keep our famous "Bull Dust" out. They are often run dry.

If it has the standard paper type OEM production filter and air box fitted, then it should not have any oil on it.
If it does then it will probably relate to oil getting into the air box from the crankcase breather. First thing to check is that the oil is not over the full mark. You will get excessive misting in the oil if the sump is too full. If the oil level is alright, it may have already blown off the excess. Clean out the air box and filter and take it for a ride and get it nice and hot. Then recheck for oil in the air box. If there is still oil appearing and the level is good, then you may have a crankcase pressure problem from blow by. This is generally indicative of failing compression rings or worn piston/sleeve/rings in combinations. Do a compression test of the engine. Low compression will tell you that soon you may have a top end rebuild on your hands. Happy to answer any other questions you may have,. Cheers

Yellow sludge in air filter housing poor performance bike stalls and will not rev at times

A lot of motorcycle manufacturers add a yellow oil to the air filter as an added measure to emove prticulates from the air.Sometimes if moister is introduced to the system for any reason it mixes with that oil causing air intake restriction.Remove filter and clean with a mild solvent and soak filter with manufacturers recommended oil and you should have no more problems.Good luck..................

I over filled the crank case with oil, as my bike leaks. But my ******* put far too much oil in. I noticed a few days ago that there is oil slowly seeping out under the valve covers, and off the air return...

Hi. I doubt that you have damaged the engine. The only reason the gas milage dropped so drasticcally, is that the air filter must have been soaked in oil. If the filter is soaked in oil, the carburetter will get little or almost no air theough the intake and then your air/fuel mixture is very lean. Make sure to clean the air filter and take it for a drive. Hope this helps

Gas is in the air filter compartment. What could be the problem?

your floats are sticking and overflowing out the back of the carbs.
your overflow tube in your float bowl must be clogged, otherwise the gas would run on the ground throught the drain tube.
Clean your carb really good and you shouldn't have any problems.
I recommend taking them apart and soaking everything overnight.

Take the jets out and the float&needle and soak the carb bodies, jets and screws.
After soaking rinse with water really well.
After rinsing, blow through every opening in the carb bodies, blow through each jet, and make sure you can see through them and through the little holes in the side of the main jet.

Reassemble and should work like new.

If your floats are still leaking, you make have to buy a new float needle valve.
Try the cleaning first.
As for the carb soak, you can purchase it at any local auto parts store for approx $22.00

1997 suzuki ls650 savage engine oil type? and how much should i see in site glass to be full?

10-40 probably, check level when the bike is sitting level (the true use of the center stands) you should see oil line across the sight glass but dont fill it more than 1/2 way in the sight glass, it can cause problems.

are you sure it's motor oil or air filter oil? Most people who regularly maintenence their air filter at every oil change clean it out and use a new "filter oil" u can find it by K&N it helps to collect the dirt that would otherwise pass thru a cheaper or paper filter causing future problems within the engine or fuel delivery system aka clogged carburator...
