There are several things that can cause this. Let's not assume anything. Visible spark at the plugs does not mean they aren't failing under compression. Throw some new ones in. Keep in mind fuel and ignition problems often have the same symptoms. Don't just look in the fuel tank, take the air cleaner off and twist the throttle. You should see a stream of gas spray from the accellerator pump, which is the small brass tube in the throat. If not, figure out why not. While you are down there, look at the clamps where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads. If it is oily and dirty, you have bad seals and an air leak (not expensive). Follow the plug wires to the ignition coil, and make sure nothing is touching the small terminals. If you have those silly braided plug wires, throw them away and put the stock ones back on. If all this checks out, you may have a primary ignition problem. If you have a tachometer and the needle jumps around, you do. Your ignition has a sensor located under the round cover on the gearcase. Follow the wires from under the cam cover to the cannon plug, checking for visible problems. The ignition module is under one of the triangle shaped covers on the side. You can't borrow one from the dealer, so borrow one from a friend with a sportster. You don't have to mount it, just let it hang. This is about all you can do without some pretty involved troubleshooting.

What sort of bike is it ? Sounds like your timing is 'out' If it's a multi cylinder, are the plug leads on the correct plugs ?

Yesterday my 1993 chevy s-10 blazer was driving fine but when i cut it off and went in the house for a second and went to crank it back up it wouldn't start it turnsover when i turn the key and its getting...

If you are sure you have a spark to at least half of the plugs, and there is no reason to suspect that the engine was being used abnormally just before it was shut down then it is most likely flooded or you ran out of gas.
Black smoke from the tailpipe indicates that the engine is getting a fuel mixture abnormally high in fuel (flooding). White smoke generally indicates not enough fuel.
Unless your engine is damaged or the timing changed, your engine will run if it has the following: proper fuel mixture, air, a spark to at least half of the spark plugs, and compression.
For a "flooded" engine there are two routes. Wait until the excess fuel has had time to dissipate or hold the accelerator to the floor while attempting to start. Be prepared to let off the accelerator about halfway as soon as it starts. And then down to about 1500 rpm. You do not want to over rev the engine. But holding it at about 1500 rpms for about 3-5 seconds will help flush out any excess fuel. You can then slowly return it to idle speed.

The engine indicator on the dash wont stay lit before the start of the car, the engine turnsover but doesnt start

There is no simple answer, there are to many variables. If you have access to a scan tool, pulling the codes should help. Without them its back to old school hunt and peck method. At this point we need to narrow down the problem. You need to test for spark.
  1. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  2. Remove the spark plugs and install the spark plug wires to each spark plug.
  3. Ground (do not hold spark plug) the spark plug; check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
Crank the engine for no more than 2 seconds at a time to prevent flooding the engine with gasoline.
If you have spark, You will want to make sure you have fuel injector pulse, along with fuel pressure. If you have spark ..simply spray some starting fluid in through the air filter and hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over while spraying. If it fires up, you know it is fuel related( fuel pump, regulator, or ECM if no injector pulse) . If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well. This should give you a few things to test and check to start you on your way to narrowing it down. If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection for power and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). If it is DIS( no distributor). It may be the Crank sensor or the ECU. The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well.
The ECU uses the signal sent from the Crank sensor to trigger the spark and fuel injectors. ( make certain you have checked all fuses)

96 mercury turnsover but wont start. fuel pump ok.

Check for spark. If you have spark and fuel, check for compression. You can rent a comression gauge from many auto part stores. Make sure you ask them for the compression specs. A compression test will reveal if there is a physical issue with the engine.

Pull a spark plug after trying to start it, and sniff the plug. If it smells like gas, you are getting fuel. Then check for spark. First leave the gas to dry off the plug. Then with heavy gloves on, or holding the metal body of the plug to the engine block with it plugged into the plug wire, have someone crank it while you look for a bright bluish spark between the electrodes on the plug. If nothing, your problem is ignition rather than fuel. Good luck. Again, make sure the gas has dried from the plug before you try this, and make sure to hold the plug and wire with something insulated. It will give you a serious shock if you don't!

My gs 750 was running ok, but now it wont start with the elec start and when i try to kick start it. it takes alot of effert to start and now i cant get it to start no more

Do the following test:- (1) check if theres sparks at the spark plugs, (2) check if the spark plug/s are getting wet with gas.
If the plugs have fouled up i.e. turn blackish due to too 'rich', you better replace them and retune the engine.
Check the valve clearance and adjust accordingly and also go thro the air-mixture screw/s ...tighten them in slowly being careful not to tighten them too hard to the last to avoid damaging the tip of the screws.
Try to start the bike's engine should start taking into account tht its now got a new set of spark plugs and let it run to some good temperature thn set the air-mixture screw/s:-
release to 2 and half turns (turn outwards).
From the sound and the running of the engine you would know if its at its running ok can however go in or out + - a little to get good idling of the engine ...go for a spin and recheck the spark plugs to its condition and offcourse for the starting issue if its solved.
Hope this helps!
