There are several things that can cause this. Let's not assume anything. Visible spark at the plugs does not mean they aren't failing under compression. Throw some new ones in. Keep in mind fuel and ignition problems often have the same symptoms. Don't just look in the fuel tank, take the air cleaner off and twist the throttle. You should see a stream of gas spray from the accellerator pump, which is the small brass tube in the throat. If not, figure out why not. While you are down there, look at the clamps where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads. If it is oily and dirty, you have bad seals and an air leak (not expensive). Follow the plug wires to the ignition coil, and make sure nothing is touching the small terminals. If you have those silly braided plug wires, throw them away and put the stock ones back on. If all this checks out, you may have a primary ignition problem. If you have a tachometer and the needle jumps around, you do. Your ignition has a sensor located under the round cover on the gearcase. Follow the wires from under the cam cover to the cannon plug, checking for visible problems. The ignition module is under one of the triangle shaped covers on the side. You can't borrow one from the dealer, so borrow one from a friend with a sportster. You don't have to mount it, just let it hang. This is about all you can do without some pretty involved troubleshooting.

What sort of bike is it ? Sounds like your timing is 'out' If it's a multi cylinder, are the plug leads on the correct plugs ?

Lights come on strong, bike won't start. when i push the starter button and hold it down and then pull in the clutch a large banging sound comes from inside the right side of the gas tank.

Hi Noah, It's either fuel OR electrical, First check both spark plug and coil.. Pull spark plug out and visually inspect for any dirt touching both electrodes... Next, Plug the spark plug back into the spark plug lead and earth it to the motor(make sure the spark plug is touching metal)then try turning the motor to see if the spark plug is sparking...
Also the link below is a short YouTube video showing the right colour spark and it should spark over the top of the centre electrode,
How to check for Spark Plug Fire in any engine
If it does spark then it's a fuel problem. You need to pull your carby off and unscrew the bottom half from the top, 1st sign of a needle stuck inside the seat is a dry carby There you'll find the float, push the float up and down and see if the needle above the float slides up and down from the seat, If the needle stays up then it's stuck and NOT letting the fuel into the carby, Just pull it down with your fingers to loosen it up..I hope this helps.... 2008 dyna 3.000 miles. runs on rear cylender only ha fresh gas and plugs has spark

Assuming that you have done a compression test and both cylinders have ample compression to run( adverage 150 psi) check that both plugs are actually sparking. If this is a fuel injected model check fuel pressure, check for voltage at both injectors on the common color wire to each. If all is good there you can swap the front injector to the rear(provided they are the same part-most are) and see if the dead cylinder moves with it. If it does the injector is bad.

5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in fuel system/tank
7. Water or dirt in carburator.
8. Intake air leak.
9. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricking fuel flow.
10. Inrichner valve inoperative.
11. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).

Try replacing your spark plug caps and your spark plugs. A bad resister in a cap could be causing the misfire. Purchase NGK brand replacement spark plug caps, they are the same as the original caps but will only cost $5 a piece instead of $30 each. The caps simply unscrew off of the end of the wires.

I have a jinlun sports scooter i started it up and a bang come out of the exhaust and now there is a hole in the exhaust pipe and it wont start what is the problem can you please help?

sounds like you had a lot of unburnt fuel in the cylinder or pipe. You first need to check you have a spark at the spark plug by removing it placing it connected to its HT lead so that the outer edge (screw threads) is against the engine, keeping yourself clear of it turn the engine over and look for a spark.
Fix the exhaust it needs to be right for the engine to run.
Are you getting fuel? look to see if the spark plug is wet after trying to turn it over.
Check the timing it might be out causing all that unburnt fuel to end up where it did in the first place.
Your engine might be damaged so get it compression tested.

Rebuilt carb but won't start, it tries to but coughs back through carb, is my engine out of timing? can you help? thanks otis

From your explanation it seems tht the bike's engine could be out of timing, but prior to the carburator cleaning was it acting the same and thts why you decided to clean the carbs?
If it does cough back thro the carbs tht proves tht theres fuel in the float chamber and theres also sparks at the plugs....try replacing the spark plugs.
Best too is to check the valve clearance, and also the igntion timing .
Hope this helps!

My gs 750 was running ok, but now it wont start with the elec start and when i try to kick start it. it takes alot of effert to start and now i cant get it to start no more

Do the following test:- (1) check if theres sparks at the spark plugs, (2) check if the spark plug/s are getting wet with gas.
If the plugs have fouled up i.e. turn blackish due to too 'rich', you better replace them and retune the engine.
Check the valve clearance and adjust accordingly and also go thro the air-mixture screw/s ...tighten them in slowly being careful not to tighten them too hard to the last to avoid damaging the tip of the screws.
Try to start the bike's engine ...it should start taking into account tht its now got a new set of spark plugs and let it run to some good temperature thn set the air-mixture screw/s:-
release to 2 and half turns (turn outwards).
From the sound and the running of the engine you would know if its at its running ok ..you can however go in or out + - a little to get good idling of the engine ...go for a spin and recheck the spark plugs to its condition and offcourse for the starting issue if its solved.
Hope this helps!
