1. Remove the plug from the cylinder.

2. Put the plug wire cap on the removed plug.

3. Have a buddy push down several times on the kick starter
while you look at the end of the plug for a spark.

This works best in a dim or dark garage.

I have a 2001 yamaha yz426f that backfires after start and shoots flame from exaust and the exaust gets so hot it glows red.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

Bike sat up for 3 or 4 years. recently cleaned the carb, changed the plug and oil and bike started. Tried starting it recently and it wont. Seem to be backfiring sometimes when kicking it over.

clean plug .. although new plug if old fuel or unbalanced carb it may quickly foul. if this works you may need help to work out whats causing plug to foul.

What is the red bottom on the carb of a 2001 yamaha yz 426

if its the one by the choke it is the "Hot start", if you have trouble starting in warm weather it should help the bike start....i am no mechanic but that is my understanding.

Really black spark plug on 2002 wr426 irregular spark and runs fine when new plug in engine . only getting 5hrs use to a plug. running far too rich maybe any ideas ?

If this bike has a two cycle engine and auto lube or auto mix you might need to have the oil to gas mixture adjusted by a good motorcycle shop. It is not a very expensive adjustment, and running to much oil can carbon up the rings which can damage the cylinder wall.

Hi,

Yes, this is where you fil the motor oil.

RE: ABOVE is what I'm reading @ the fixya Site @
http://www.fixya.com/PostAnswer.aspx?thid=1695323&prdid=986097&ctgid=391 so.......

Is your Yamaha a 2000 or 2001?
Did You try to start it several times, then it kicked in a little, then a little more, then
started spitting oil and won't even start?
Has it been sitting for quite some time?
Did you put new gas in it?
If so...................................................
Check the OIL and replace if needed..........................................
Put in a can of high test GAS...Spend at least $10.00!.................
Spray a lot of Starter Fluid ($3) into the Air Intake........................
Crank Engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

When you get it running, IF IT'S STILL BLOWING OIL .............................
Add a can of CRANKCASE SEAL'S LEAKS (less than $10) for conditioning
the seals............................................and......................................................

NEVER USE YEAR OLD GAS AGAIN AND ADD FUEL CLEANER AT
EVERY OIL CHANGE!
