Bad carb or fuel injection issues- the system is fuel rich (black smoke) and also fuel rich system can make the idle low. Many things can cause this but thses are just a few.

SOURCE: 87 Supra idles rough and dies out

I would suspect a vacuum leak. At idle under high vacuum the air fuel mix is being leaned out until you have misfiring so bad the engine quits. The exhaust smells rich because even a lean mixture, if it doesn't light off, if full of unburned fuel. At road speeds, the vacuum is low so the engine doesn't care if there is a small leak somewhere. It is getting most of its air through the open throttle. Check all your vacuum lines but remember that even if every line is okay, it could still be leaking from an old cracked intake manifold gasket.

SOURCE: rough idle

check you throttle position sensor first then fuel pressure regulator, then fuel pump. i have a 92 and had to recently do a massive overhaul. my rough idle was caused by a malfunctioning tps with a small exaust leak causing it to race and an intake manifold gasket. also check your idle speed adjustment settings.

Black smoke together with rough idle, but only sometimes

is the "service engine soon" light on?? it should be on and flashing is the car is misfiring. that means spark plug or coil is not firing. if the light is on, scan it with a scanner that you can buy at walmart in automotive section. that will cost you about $60 to buy and you have it for future problems. dealer would charge you alot more to scan. or even some autoparts stores will scan it for you for free. scanner will tell you which cylinder is not firing. start there.

Black smoke from exhaust, rough idle, black soot on plugs

signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator-- the vehicle will run rough, the engine will not start ( usually in the mornings,) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. 1- black soot on plugs-2-black smoke from tailpipe-3- running rough-4- stalling, good-day! repost if need be.

If you are running black smoke that usually means there is oil and gas mixing together too rich. You probably have a seal somewhere that is gone in the engine.

To fix this try to make the gas mixture a little less (you can change the amount of gas going to your truck, but its better someone who knows what they are doing to do this. You can also run a thicker oil, and possibly put in some oil fixer you can buy stuff at canadian tire or something like that which goes in with the oil and it will help seal cracks and holes in the motor.

After my 2005 dodge magnum sits (lets say overnight) it runs rough and produce white smoke. After several minutes the smoking and rough idling stops. What causes this and what price range to get it fixed

White smoke is a sign of water/condensation (due to the coolant additive)......worst case scenario, you have a head gasket leak (minor at this stage), or you simply need a tune up......as white smoke on cold start up could be normal...has it just started happening, or have you only just started noticing it ???

When was the last time it has been serviced (plugs, oil etc)

My 94 chevy with a 5.7 seems to foul a couple of spark plugs at the back of the engine on the drivers side quite quickly. My uncle who is a mechanic said he has seen same problem many times on that engine.
I sugest you pull your plugs and clean or replace if necessarry.
The first time I changed the plugs on the truck to fix a rough idle , I started at the back of the passenger side and worked my way around.
Of course , the last 2 that I got to were the problem...... Heartless uncle just laughed.
Also , white smoke just at start up could indicate worn valve stem seals.

Black smoke points to unburnt fuel. I would start by replacing the spark plugs and wires if you have not done so in the last couple of years.

If you have had the same gas in there the whole time it has gone bad fuel goes bad pretty quickly when you get deployed you should add fuel satbilizer or have sombody start it for you.

Hard start, rough idle, some black smoke, engine service light on

A scan for trouble codes may point you in the right direction quickly, rather than hit & miss, with replacing parts. Some of the autoparts stores will scan for free, and your right where you need to be to get the right part at the same time.
