Question about 1998 Honda VT 750 C2 Shadow

1 Answer

1998 honda shadow will not start

The bike has been sitting for a few months. tried to start it. It would run for few seconds then stop. This was on full choke. After about 30 minutes of back and forth it finally would stay running, but only on full choke. Finally got it to throttle up with choke off after about an hour, but would only run if you were on the gas. If you tried to let it idle it would die. Also, front cylinder would not get hot and exhaust from this cylinder would not warm up untillI was finally able to throttle it up. then it got hot. Replaced the spark plugs, now all I can get it to do is to run a few seconds with choke on, and then it dies. What is wrong?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:

  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

2007 Honda shadow spirit 1100. Has set up for 6 months and will fire but will not idle without choke on full.

Failure to idle (or even start/ run) without the choke is indicative of dirty carb(s), partially clogged slow jet. Leaving a bike to sit with un-stabilized fuel is inviting problems, ethanol is the culprit.

Where is the battery on a cb500 twin 98

Lift the seat. and buy a manual. then try bump starting the bike, when it is running let it sit for a while. If the bike has been sitting with a flat battery for more than about 1 month you will more than likely need a new battery. Try Wemoto for parts and batteries.

I have a 2007 Honda Shadow 750, will turn over but not start. Tried shooting starting fluid, and will run until starter fluid is gone. Has not been ridden much in last several months....

Have you put fresh fuel in it ?
also you may need to flush out your carbs as they may be sticking.
Make sure things like the choke is on, the fuel on.
Turn off lights etc.
Some bikes also have kill switches (yes we have all done this !) make sure thats not on.
Also that the side stand switch is not cutting out ignition.

I don't have a problem yet. I'm buying a 1997 Honda Shadow Vt 1100 from my sister-in-law. My step brother died a few months ago and she want's to sell me his bike, my question is I know how well my...

If the bike is in good running order you should be able to drive it every day form dusk to dawn. 10-12 hour rides should be no trouble what so ever. If the motorcycle has been sitting and not run for a few months and your intention is to hop on and ride it six hours to your house, you may want to consider either trailering it home or taking it for a couple of short drives just to verify it is running properly before attempting the long drive home.

1194 VT1100 trouble starting. no problems prior to letting it sit

To begin with ...try to check if there is gas in the float chamber of the carburator/carburators by unscrewing the drain screw at the bottom of the carburator.
Secondly check if there is sparks coming to the spark plugs..off course remember to wipe dry the gas around the bike's engine!
If you have both of this , it should start ... you may hve to use the choke to start.
Let me know if it did start .thks .
Hope this will help!.

Knight.
