740 Oil Cap Leaking, Lots of Oil

Hi
My sons 88 740 has started to leak oil from the oil cap. This has started to happen after he topped it up with oil. Is there a breather hole in the cap? Also is there a rubber type seal around the base?
Thank you

On my car, the issue seemed to have been that the viscosity of the oil caused blockage in the flametrap or vacuum hoses and they needed to be cleaned out. I also have an 88 740.

Presuming the oil is coming from around the filler cap..theres usualy a rubber seal around the base, these can become brittle and break, sometimes quite a large piece (1/4 inch) can break off making a fair old leak from the oil splashing around from the cam, replace it with a NEW one, should cure problem

Hi. My Santa Fe 2009 Diesel is leaking oil from the cooler on top of the engine, and is smoking more that it should be.

1. You might have forgotten to put the cap on properly after putting oil in, and some oil spilled onto the motor - when this heated up, it began to smoke. If you left the cap off altogether it could be a lot of oil, and a lot of smoke! (I know as this happened to me once)!
If this is the case then there's nothing to worry about - just check your oil level and close the cap properly.
- - - 2. If however the cap was firmly on, then you may have a leaky engine, which could be very serious. I would take it to be checked by a car mechanic.

No oil to the top of the head

It's common for that to happen on start up. If you're not getting oil to the top under acceleration then that's of concern. See if you have gunk built up in the head and oil cap. If you do then start with the cheapest fix which would be to have the oil system flushed out with a detergent. If no go there then you probably need to replace the oil pump.

Hi I need help with my 2004 Freelander TD4: suddenly blue/white smoke coming out the back of the car ( the car did not over heated the heat gauge was at normal position) notes that there was oil leaking...

cracked block. once it heats up the crack gets bigger and the oil gets thinner which makes more oil burn. run car without the oil cap on and see if lots of air/ oil comes out if so thats blow by and you need a new engine.

Antifreeze leaking from engine on 2001 ford focus

It sounds like you have a blown head gasket, check your engine oil, take off your oil cap and if it is frothy around the cap and inside the head, you have a blown head gasket.

92 ford tempo has oil coming out at the cap

I believe you do mean the oil filler cap. If is that under the cap there is a rubber seal, probably became hard and does not seal well. Renew it,either the seal if you find it or the cap itself.

What is the oil filter cap?? just dropped my R32 in for a service and they told me the oil filter cap is leaking

Some VWs have an aluminum housing that oil filter sits in (canister filter) the cap has a seals and an "O" ring at top. If it is overtightened it can crack and it sounds like that's what happened to yours.

Oil leak

yes this is caused by excessive crankcase pressure, check the PCV system for proper function.

1988 Volvo 740 Smoke from Oil Cap and Dipstick hole when removed

good morning and welcome to fixya
you can try a couple of little tricks, try taking the pcv valve out and cleaning it or replacing it. try cleaning the fuel injection and look for carbon build up on or around the egr valve. you can also do a compression check on the engine and take readings see which one has a major loss spray wd-40 in the hole and recheck to see if compression changes, you might be able to fix just that cylinder if you dont want to fix everything else. good luck and let me know

Leaking oil from oil cap

The problem is there is to much crank case pressure, make sure the PCV ( positive crankcase ventalation) valve is working correctly.
