Truck idles smoothe, But smells rich running or sitting but no visable leaks, runs rough @ lower RPM's on 2nd,3rd,4h,&5th gears, will not resond well to quick stab accellerations-bogs down, responds to slow throtteling but still rough like it's missing,it stuttuders,hesitates, it seems to run a little better at higher RPM's all gears,but a chore to drive like that... I've change plugs, I have sprayed carb cleaner while running and it cleaned up pretty well,the choke seems to be functioning properly, I've adjusted the air/fuel mixture to seat then 1-1/2 out I was told as standard.I'm going to change plug wires tonite and check plugs again,Please help Thanks. RR
I think you must have the carburettor plunger not going well as you are getting flat spots under sudden acceleration, I think the best way to go is to get the carburettor overhauled.
I agree. Get that carb looked at. Mine did that until I finally got it fixed. It didn't take a rebuild they just fixed the problem (a diaphram I believe) and adjusted the carb and everything was fine. If it runs rich for too long it'll screw up the catalytic converter requiring a replacement to pass smog. Like mine :-(

Very common problem the fuel pressure regulator under the plenum is leaking and causes a rich running condition on start ups and if bad enough can cause it at idle all the time
Check wiring harness to fuel injectors where it runs through intake manifold - these chafe through and cause injectors to stay on or off. Also check engine grounds. 2 at back of head near firewall and one at drivers side engine mount (almost impossible to see)
If you cannot find a leak then it is probably running too rich if you are also having a rough start and or rough idle. You can find out if it has been running too rich by checking any one of your spark plugs...it will be coated with a lustrous black residue and/or smell like gas. At that point you will have to change them.
You can also try replacing your PCV, a clogged PCV can also allow that type of smell to escape past it's grommet into the engine bay instead of recirculating it back into the system.
Hello;
It sounds as if you have a couple of possible problems. First could be the fuel pump. If yoou disconnect the fuel line, put the line in a jar and crank the engine over, you should get a pint in 15 seconds or so. Also check the pressure, should have around 5 psi. Secondly, you may have a vacuum hose cracked, broken, or leaking. Check your hoses and also the carbureator for leaks.
Hope this helps;
Thanks;
Rich
