Question about 1989 Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing

Poor carburation on the classic gl1000 goldwing

I have 4 gl1000's and they all have problem carbs. Tend to flood on start, carbon up when running, cause difficult starting, home and motorcycle workshop carb rebuilds have the same problem. I know some carbs were replaced with VW cabs off flat fours. Randshack of America is not infavour of this, claiming difficulty with fuel supply in cornering as well as poor fuel consumption.
Is there a dealer reconditioning system for these carbs?
Or a carb specialist in the uk who is competent with these carbs?
Now that fuel injection is fitted to all(?) bikes these days is there a fuel injection conversion kit for the early carburetors?
Is the Gl1200 carb in anu way compatilble with specialist workhop input?

Well i will tell you that im a motorcycle tech and it sure sounds like the float level is too high

I have a friend that moved here (usa north carolina)
from uk and he works on hondas he just rebuilt gl 1000 carbs and put them in a cleaning bath

sounds like it's full of carbon, which is burning! or if on header pipes your mixtures are too weak eg blocked jets or intake air leaks

Bike seems to be losing power and stalling when changing down gears. it will tick over when sitting no problem only when riding it will happen, any ideas.

It almost sounds like dirty or sticking carburetor tops. Some vacuum carburetors have floating pistons. When they get dirty they stick causing all kinds of erratic accelerations and decelerations . I own several Honda Gl1000 Goldwings and yearly maintenance includes taking off the carb tops and cleaning the pistons. Like wise some bikes use vacuum carburetors with rubber diaphragms. These can suffer many of the same problems of they get dirt or carbon on them. They can also crack or tear and cause poor performance. I would start with a carburetor top inspection and cleaning.

On start up when moving on first gear it starts to like shake just like if you did not give it enough gas

In an auto mobile the shake when you start rolling can be associated with a bad universal joint in the drive line. You could center stand the bike and spin the rear wheel by hand to see if this is the issue . You would probably have to buy a shaft assembly to fix that type of problem. I think you may be dealing with fuel issue probably related to two different things. Early GL1000's need to have the carb tops removed and cleaned at least once a year so the pistons do not stick. This will stop erratic behavior of the bike especially during take off . The other issue that can cause poor take off is ethanol fuel. Early wings prefer no ethanol fuel . The shake or noise is often pre-ignition/knocking/pinging/shaking caused by the fuel burning to soon and too lean. It can also cause you to turn up the idle so it does not stall when at a stop light. No ethanol fuel will cause you to have to turn down the idle or it will be idling too fast to shift in first gear. Again this is more common with the GL1000 but may also affect the GL1100.Remember the bikes were designed to run on 96 octane of real gas. Fortunately the GL1000 will run on 91 octane no ethanol. Sounds like it's running really rich. Does it smell like it's running rich? If so, you need to take it to a dealer if it's a fuel injected bike. If it's a carburated bike, check the air filter or enricher. Anything any further in the carb requires disassembly of the carburator.

I have a gsxr750t srad thats runs very poor at low revs and sometimes when warm needs very high revs to pull away in first any ideas as i have tried the following 1 replaced plugs 2 replaced the air filter...

have you tried to clean the injectors or to see if injectors was bad you will need some help doing this step go get some carb cleaner from any auto parts store a big can then start your motorcycle get some one to kep it running for you then squirt the carb cleaner in where the air filters are on both sides and then start feathering the gas to keep it running. this will take awhile but keep doing it till the bike starts running right. sounds like you have carbon build up somewhere. hope this helps good luck
