Question about 1989 Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing

Poor carburation on the classic gl1000 goldwing

I have 4 gl1000's and they all have problem carbs. Tend to flood on start, carbon up when running, cause difficult starting, home and motorcycle workshop carb rebuilds have the same problem. I know some carbs were replaced with VW cabs off flat fours. Randshack of America is not infavour of this, claiming difficulty with fuel supply in cornering as well as poor fuel consumption.
Is there a dealer reconditioning system for these carbs?
Or a carb specialist in the uk who is competent with these carbs?
Now that fuel injection is fitted to all(?) bikes these days is there a fuel injection conversion kit for the early carburetors?
Is the Gl1200 carb in anu way compatilble with specialist workhop input?

Hi, Michael my guess is you may have a weak battery or one of your ignition ballast's has gone south for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Honda, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one. I got a 1990 kawi js 440 andf rebuilt the carbs and its hard to start and when it does it dies then the carb floods with gas and will not start again cuz of to much fuel do you know what is wrong

Your carburator bowl float is stuck in open position, or it is sticking allowing the gas to flood the engine.
Remove the carburator boal and try to clean or replace the carburator bowl float.

Bike seems to be losing power and stalling when changing down gears. it will tick over when sitting no problem only when riding it will happen, any ideas.

It almost sounds like dirty or sticking carburetor tops. Some vacuum carburetors have floating pistons. When they get dirty they stick causing all kinds of erratic accelerations and decelerations . I own several Honda Gl1000 Goldwings and yearly maintenance includes taking off the carb tops and cleaning the pistons. Like wise some bikes use vacuum carburetors with rubber diaphragms. These can suffer many of the same problems of they get dirt or carbon on them. They can also crack or tear and cause poor performance. I would start with a carburetor top inspection and cleaning.

Starts up in am after drivimg an hour shut off wait five minutes have to hold to floor turns over severally times before starting

It sounds like the carburator needs to be rebuilt. If you have to hold it to the floor to get it to start that means it's flooded. So, the carburator is leaking gas into the engine when it's not running. Are getting poor gas mileage too?

Our 2003 ultra classic runs good while cool but as it gets hotter it starts missing

Sounds like it's running really rich. Does it smell like it's running rich? If so, you need to take it to a dealer if it's a fuel injected bike. If it's a carburated bike, check the air filter or enricher. Anything any further in the carb requires disassembly of the carburator.
