2008 vstar 1100, acts like its running on 1 cyl, strong smell of fuel from exhaust.??????

Have you tried changing the plugs. You might have one fouled also check for spark.

Just a thought. is your air filter clean? A dirty filter will make it burn more fuel and cause the plugs to foul.Is your choke working properly? Both of these will foul plugs and use more fuel.

Why would I have to re jet my 2002 Yamaha vstar 1100 custom?


Hi, Anonymous if you have changed your fuel delivery system, air filter size or flow rate, mufflers or exhaust system or a significant change in altitude your carburetors need re-tuning and if your fuel system (gas tank, filters, fuel valve and carburetor) is contaminated with ethanol sludge, varnish, rust, dirt, water etc. or your bike has been sitting for months or years without running these components must be "PROPERLY" cleaned and reassembled "CORRECTLY" before any adjustments can be made. Tuning your carburetor is fairly simple once you understand the basic principals. You engine is a simple airbox sucking air in and blowing it out, it is finely tuned at the factory for maximum performance once you upset that delicate balance by changing air filters, camshafts or exhaust systems your performance may go down the and the engine may run poorly, you need to compensate the air-fuel mixture in the carburetor in order for the engine to run smoothly and at peak performance. If you are running multi carburetors you need to sync them first and make sure your air cleaner element is clean and dry for paper elements or lightly oiled for foam and meshed elements and properly installed. Here is how and where you compensate trouble: "TIP" if your engine "BOGS" your not getting enough fuel.
1. Closed to 1/8 throttle is managed by the air screw and pilot/slow jet.
2. 1/8 to 1/4 throttle is managed by the air-screw, pilot/slow jet, and throttle slide.
3. 1/4 to 1/2 throttle is managed by the throttle slide and jet needle.
4. 1/2 to 3/4 throttle is managed by the jet needle, needle jet, main jet, and air jet.
5. 3/4 to wide open throttle is managed by the main jet and air jet.
6. Wide open throttle is managed by the main jet.
If you are running lean, spark plug electrode color is white, engine runs hot and feels like it is starving for fuel you need to go up on the jet size or move the c-clip down one notch. If you are running rich, spark plug color is black or dark gray, engine runs cool, and bogs down when accelerating you need to go down on jet size or move the c-clip up one notch. When your carburetor is properly tuned for maximum performance your spark plug electrode will be a light tan color like coffee with cream. If you prefer fuel economy over performance you can go down on main jet sizes until a satisfactory level of lower performance is acceptable versus MPH, your spark plug color will be whiter and your engine will run warmer. These tuning adjustments will only make improvements if your intake and exhaust system have no air leaks or sealing issues and the entire electrical system is in proper working order and you have no mechanical issues. My bike was running great. I have a 2008 vstar 650 and put vance and hines short shots on it along with dynojet kit and k and n airfilter. Now it will only run on choke and dies when I push the choke in. I...


You have fitted an awful lot of kit and so I would suggest that you take it to a rolling road (Dyno) and get the bike set up properly. It will csot you , but it will be well worth the money.

I have a 2009 1100 vstar and the engine spits occasionally back into the carburetor and some times pops so hard that it kills the engine. I took it back to the dealer they reset everthing and they say that...


When Harley's spit through the carburetors they usually pull off the intake manifolds and reseal the them . New gaskets, o-rings, or even manifolds, whatever it takes to seal the intake. You may want to run some Yamaha Ring Free Fuel Additive ( Chevron Techron Fuel Additive) through the bike. A bad spark plug or spark plug cap could also be contributing to the pre-ignition that you are experiencing. If you can fix it yourself may be Yamaha will be kind enough to cover the parts cost if you are still under warranty and you are very polite in the letter you write.

Vstar 1100 idling rough and backfiring letting off the throttle


It sounds to me that your carbs might be a little gunked up - you mentioned the gas may have been old, so it's possible that the smaller (idle) jets are slightly plugged up. Fresh fuel might do the trick and/or you could try using a fuel system cleaner and water remover. This problem might 'solve itself' with a little time.

As far as the backfire - this might be either from the carb issue or it could be related to that rattle you mentioned - you could have a loose connection at or near the head - this can **** air and cause a backfire.

1. Dirt or other foreign matter between float valve and its seat.
2. Float valve sticking.
3. Float valve and/or valve seat worn or damaged.
4. Float misadjusted.
5. Float cracked, leaky or damaged.
6. Excessive "PUMPING" of hand throttle grip.

1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking.
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Intake air leak.
10. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, carburetor and/or filter.
11. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
12. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
13. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
14. Damaged carburetor.
15. Incorrect valve timing.
16. Weak or broken valve springs.
17. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.

Fuel drain tube...i think


I have 08 1100 vstar, haven"t road in a month or so, but have regulary started to keep baterry charged. i took it out yesterday to ride, hard to start, acted like it running on one cyl. strong smell of unburned fuel from exhaust. ????????
