Question about 1999 Honda XR 600 R

1 Answer

Help? I have an xr 600 1999. My bike wont idle at all and when it is running it is popping and backfiring. I removed and had the head rebuilt. I also cleand the carburetor. for some reason the throttle is hard to pull when it is running, but not when it is not running. it is hard toi pull until about half way open and then it lets loose. I have been racking my brain on this one and all i can come up with is that the gasket at the top of the carburetor has a vacume leak causing the plunger to be pulled down until the the pressure in the air box equalizes with the pressure above the plunger. If that makes any sense.

Honda XR600 has at least three very predictable wear problems. I'm referring to wear problems that go beyond the usual replacement items, such as chains, brakes and tires. The first problem usually occurs with the rear hub bearings, which in most cases develops at 6-8,000 off-road miles. You can tell if the bearings are bad by simply grabbing the rear wheel with both hands and applying back and forth pressure to see if there is play. If there is any play, replace the bearings immediately. If they go out on you while you're riding the bike, you'll probably destroy the entire hub assembly, which would be costly. The replacement bearings can be found at almost any auto supply house and will probably last longer than the stock Honda ones. It's not a big problem if you keep and eye on it. You should replace the front hub bearings at the same time. They won't be bad yet, but you can bet they will wear like the rear ones. It just takes a little longer.
The second problem is with the timing-chain tensioner. This is an internal engine mechanism that keeps the timing chain taught. You can tell if it is going out if you hear a clicking noise coming from your engine. It usually occurs at 10-12,000 off-road miles, and will continuously get worse the longer you let it go. Obviously, there are other reasons you can have clicking noises in your engine, but a worn timing-chain tensioner is a very common problem at that mileage. It's not an extremely critical thing to worry about at first, but don't wait too long. The more your timing chain slaps around, the more it will stretch and the more the repair cost. Most shops can do the repair in a few days, and it is covered by an extended warranty plan if you have it, but you'll have to take it to a certified Honda dealer for the repairs.
The last problem is the biggest. It's the most expensive, and if you don't have an extended warranty, you're in real trouble. It's the XR600's third gear. It usually starts going out at about 15-18,000 off-road miles. Many hard-riding racers will tell you even sooner. You'll know its starting to go when you hear the transmission howl when you're in third gear. It's not critical that you have it repaired right away, but again, it's only going to get worse if you let it go.

Why is my bike not idleing properly and backfiring/popping?

Could be dirt in carb. Clean out all the jets. Could also be sucking air between manifold and head. Make sure gasket/o-ring is sealing and that there are no cracks in manifold rubber.

Deceleration popping on a fuel injected bike

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

Was idling rev up backfierd wont start ?

Check to make sure the carburetor is still in the rubber coupler that conntects the carb to the head. usually a good backfire is all that it takes to pop it out. if it is - simply loosen the clamp on the side that popped out and slide it back together and retighten it. start the bike and enjoy.

81 honda accord runs real rough and backfiring out of carb

That is a car not a motorbike. Bikes only have 2 wheels. But you may want to set up the cam and ignition timing. it is only timing that will cause backfires.

SUZUKI 2005 DR650SE DUAL SPORT RUNS GREAT BUT AT IDLE THERE IS A SLIGHT POPPING IN IDLE RYTHYM, ALSO BACKFIRES SLIGHTLY WHEN DOWNSHIFTING...HELP

Carefully check your intake manifold for leaks, cracks, separation. An air leak on the intake side between the carburetor and the cylinder head would be the cause of popping on the intake side. If there are leaks in the exhaust system, an o-ring seal in the head, or a seal between the head pipe and the muffler, this can cause popping or backfiring in the exhaust.

I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.

No idle &bacfires on deceleration

hi mate on the carb you will find 2 screw 1 is for the idle and the over is for mixture the idle one will be the furthest out screw it in 1/4of a turns will the engine is running this will take the idle up on the engine and the backfiring is fuel in the exhaust not being burnt so on the over screw on the carb screw that in 1/4 of turns this will decrease the amount of fuel going into the engine if it still backfires screw it in 1/4 of turns again and see what difference it makes good luck

Backfiring when idling back down thru the gears

that seems to be what they do, i too have a 650a and have jardines on with baffles, it still pops and cackles when you roll off the gas. are you running no baffels? when i took mine out i noticed a drop in power as i had removed the requierd back pressure for optimum performance. you can get small baffles to slip into straight pipes from jc whitney for about $5 each.
anyway back to the backfire. my local bike shop shrugged their sholders when i asked them about mine saying it's what they do. you will get used to it and you will find a way to kinda not make it do it so much. i actually have grown to like it now, except when there are cops about.

happy safe riding
