2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

Temperature Gauge reads between half & almost red on hot days running the AC. Fluid levels are fine, new thermostat, replaced dash motors on all dash gauges, newer water pump ( 2 yrs ago), flushed system, replaced temp gauge. Car off gauge goes to lowest point 140, unplugged sensor gauge dropped off too, turn heater on temp starts going to normal. I checked the temp in radiator and it reads 150-170 degrees after a 300 mile ride.Gauge position between half & 3/4. Span is 120 to 260, so is it safe to say it is reading at half 196 -200 degrees? I see fans running at both speeds at times.

Fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

SOURCE: temp gauge reads hot when cold

That wire you are unplugging is pinched and being shorted to ground ! You need to trace that wire until you find it . Also if anyone has done any repairs recently you may want to start looking in that area .

I'm not certain if this engine has coolant bleeder valves, but if it does, make sure there aren't any pockets, particularly around the sending unit. Something is fooling the computer into thinking that things are really, really hot.

Check coolant levels to ensure they are full. Check for coolant leaks.

What you describe could be considered normal if you are driving in hot ambient temperatures with full coolants levels. Ensure you are using coolant liquid not water.

If fluid levels are full (rad and overflow bottle) and there are no leaks and the temperature gauge is not show engine it running hot; then the sensor that controls the fan(s) should be replaced.

At what temperature should the radiator fan come on for a 2004 dodge stratus?

You may or may not have a problem with the fan. It should come on around 220 degrees or when the ac is running.
The temp on the gauge and the temp the computer sees can be 10 or 15 degrees different either way.

Temp. gauge reads high some times. but the motor really isnt hot

It sounds like the coolant temperature sensor is beginning to fail. It is highly unlikely that the in-dash gauge is a problem. The coolant temp sensor inputs to the computer affecting everything from radiator fan speed, engine fuel/air calibration and a variety of other parameters.

Be absolutely certain to "burp" every bubble of atmosphere from the coolant system too. Air bubbles have the amazing ability to prevent coolant flow and will cause all sorts of problems, especially if the bubble wants to hang around the temperature sensor location.

Normal operating temperature is going to be around 210 F.

Most Autozone, Advance locations will read engine problem codes at no charge, so drop by one of those locations and let them read the problem code.

My guess will be the coolant temperature sensor. Then have the problem code reset, remove all air from the coolant and let us know how this worked.
