The car has the 2.9 inline 6cyl ,once warm it starts right up ,when it gets cold out the car is very hard to start , and the colder it is out the harder it is to get it started, unless i give it a shot of startin fluid, then it will start right up,with out the startin fluid, i have to crank it, it will fire ,but not start completely,i have to do this several times,to allow the engine to warm slightly with each attemp , untill the car does finally start and idle, once idling , i can not push the throttle untill it has run for about a min or two, or it will stall, once it has warmed up it runs great, untill the next time of a cold start, i lean toward the ECT sensor, but not sure , it is an obd2 car but unforunately our snapon scanner does nothin for volvo, help would be appreciated thank you
Take it to a volvo dealer and have the codes read
most likely a coolant temp sensor, ambient temp sensor, Baro sensor, MAP/VAF sensor problem the fault codes will tell you
it is the fuel pump for sure. If you can hit the tank and get it to run it is the pump. this drain back (hard start after sitting) is a fuel pump issue as well
The best way to attack this is to have your oil pressure checked. That would rule out a pump problem or the sender issue. If you want the least expensive fix is to just replace the oil pressure sender yourself and then see if the problem goes away. You can also add a thicker oil when you change the oil to see if that solves the problem. A 10W30 oil is thinner than a 10W50. If this helps then the engine or pump may be worn or failing. I hope the cheap fix helps!!

Here's some FYI on your situation. When you turn the switch on, all sensors are activated. One sensor is the cold start switch/temperature sending unit. When working properly, the sensor will send a pulse to the computer telling it to put the engine into cold start mode. Once this is done, a bit more fuel is added to the normal amount to the cylinders and the throttle is advanced slightly making the engine idle a bit faster for the extra fuel coming in. The engine is running to warm-up and the sensor then tells the computer to set the engine back to normal run mode. Once the engine is warm, the sensor is not being used for cold start mode. It will start right up and run smoothly. Now, since your truck is hard to start when cold, first thing you should check is the temperature sending unit wire connection first. if that connection is good, replace the temperature sending unit/sensor, and you'll be good to go. That's a simple repair that must be done when it gets hard to start when cold.
sounds like it might be ignition source...check distributor/ignition coil depending on the year and model for your vehicle. I've had the same problem with 2 past cars
My car runs good when it's cold but stalls once it warms up? ... In this situation, you can usually re-start the engine once it has hada chance to cool back ... it'll fill-up and exits fuel right up and out the vent tube which dumps it down the middle of ...
Jun 28, 2010 - Car starts and after warmed up.. it dies! ... but if i let it sits for awhile till the engine is cool down it starts right up but after its warmed up.. it dies.
First 2 things to check are the choke adjustment and operation, and the raw fuel squirt from accelerator pump when throttle pumped. You should be able to see a good squirt of gas into throat of carburetor when you move throttle linkage to wide open quickly. Choke plate ( butterfly) should be in closed position for cold start, then open gradually as engine warms up. Have you checked that as of yet? With re-start problems after warm up, may be needle and seat assembly needs replacing to retain proper fuel level in bowl for starting. If they are dirty or worn, fuel in bowl runs back out. It sounds like a carb rebuild kit might be a good idea.
Get the diagnostics test done as this can be a faulty sensor (there are several on my mind but would be just guess job) and that is why it is hard to start.
Just tuned up a jetta, put di-electric grease under the plug wire boots and especially the coil wire. The moisture causes mis-fire mainly at the coil. His VW had the same problem. Small pack of grease will be enough. buy 2 packs at adavance auto for $1.09 each.
engine coolant temp sensor is most likely cracked.. I know it sounds strange but pull it if your looking at the engine it is on the right side of the head Will make the car hard to start, smoke, and the idle will often race up and down.. easy to fix 15 dollars or so..
