Question about 2003 Suzuki AN 400 Burgman

Believe relay is not connected or no good bike will not start

Found loose wire not connected but has voltage to it. Cant find any other loose wires to connect to. Have had a problem trying to find out why bike will not start

Without a source there are too many options for a single loose wire...trace the source and hit us back...always check the battery first when it comes to not starting, it dosent hurt to have a jump box to fire it up

My 1999 Honda shadow 750cc won't start

Ok, been awhile since I played with a Honda, but I believe in the KISS method.
#1 go buy a cheap $10 meter at harbor freight, Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, etc, etc. You can't just look at a fuse and say it's good, been there done that...LOL
#2 There used to be a fuse in the headlight bucket, check to see.
#3 real simple, did you leave your KILL switch off??? If not the check voltage to kill switch, make sure you have power coming out.
#4 check the ignition wire for the starter, when key is in on position or (start) position, make sure you have voltage. If you have power, follow it to your starter leads and kill switch.
#5 check voltage at your coils, Check for voltage coming out of coils. Just because you may or may not have spark, doesn't mean you have enough to start bike.

When you hooked in the LED's you either shorted wires to blow a fuse, over loaded a wire and possibly burned it in 2. Or you dislodged a connection someplace. Go back over everything you did again, and go buy a meter.

04 Harley Dyna Wide Glide,some sort of relay/starting issue. Bought the bike used, withing in a month had a no start issue, when you remove the solenoid cover and push in the shaft the bike starts.

Hi Dave, Arnie was right on target with the alternator/voltage regulator senario, in order for the starting system to work properly you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better. If you have a multimeter, there are a few quick things you can check.
1. Make sure battery connections are clean and tight, especially the "NEGATIVE" cable at "BOTH" ends.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM
should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is grounded and functioning properly, watch video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the meter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers you may have a faulty rotor, follow step 6
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to ground, meter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, corroded pins/sockets is the # 1 offender. Also take the plunger out of the solenoid and use a stiff brass wire brush to clean the plate and contact shoes, and make sure they are tight.

Car wont start the red signal switch key stay on

The most common cause of a non-starting car is the battery. It is either weak, (low voltage) dead, (zero voltage) or has bad connections. (corroded or loose) I will assume you have a fully charged battery with good connections. (both to battery and starter relay)
If you remove the starter switch lead (small wire) from the starter relay and apply +12v from the battery to its respective prong or lead on the relay, and your starter cranks, your starter switch is faulty. (not to be confused with your key switch). If you jump the two large wires together on the relay and it cranks, then the relay is faulty. If you jump the two large wires together and nothing happens, then starter is faulty, or wires to starter are loose or broken. Picture of starter switch prong on the relay is pictured. NOTE: sparks are to be expected, so don't be too scared.

I have a Kawasaki zx10r i replaced battery and after riding bike for few minutes u loose all power to bike lights and tach lights on console than have to jump bike to get it to start than it will do again

I bought a 04 zx10r. good battery but no electrical power any where but the starter relay. all of the suspected componets were chect on a running bike and perfermed normal. the issue was in the wire harness. I found a short in the #1 terminal connector on the left rail of the seat frame. It is hard to find as it is wraped in black tape. I found that the wire terminal had corroded and broken into. This wire leads back to the positive side of the starter relay and from that point it powers almost everything on the bike. I hope this helps. Good luck. Gixxerboy.

Look at the end of your starter. There's a five-sided plate on the end held on with three small screws. Just above it, there is a single wire plugged onto the starter. Pull this wire off and connect either a test light or a volt meter to the wire. Turn the switch on and press the start button. You should see the light light up or the meter should show battery voltage. If you show voltage at this wire but the starter doesn't run, the problem is in the starter. If no voltage at the wire, your starter relay may be bad. I think the starter relay for your bike is behind the triangular plate on the left side of your bike. The relay is a one inch plastic cube just like the relays on most automobiles. With the switch still on, press the start button. You should feel the relay "click". If it does click, you might want to replace the relay and retest the starter wire. If it does not click, it could still be the relay or it could be the wiring between the start button and the starter relay. Since I don't have a wiring diagram for your bike, you may need to purchase a service manual to obtain one or find it from another source. I wouldn't think the installation of a muffler would have anything to do with the starter operation.

Bike won't start, new Harley battery, and starter bike 2006 FLHX Street Glide, all I get is a clicking noise from solenoid under seat

I'm not too familiar with the later model bikes but if I were getting a clicking noise under the seat and the bike was not starting, I'd investigate the source of the noise. It's possible that it is a starter relay that engages the solenoid that is an integral part of the starter. Look at the starter from the right hand side of your bike. You'll see a single small wire that connects to the end of the starter just above the end plate of the solenoid. Disconnect this wire and connect a test light or volt meter to the wire. Turn on your ignition switch and press the start button. You should hear the click under the seat and see voltage at the end of that wire. If not, replace the relay, a plastic cube about an inch in dimension.

No voltage to head lamp. All connections in lamp housing look good. getting voltage to rear light & a 4 turn lights. Anything else I can check?

You don't mention the year of your bike but some of the earlier Yamaha's have a relay that turns the lights on once you start the bike up.Sometimes they can stick when they get a little older.I believe most of them are located under the gas tank and they look like a small plastic pill box.You should be able to trace the headlight wires back to the relay if the bike is so equipped.Sometimes you can tap them gently and they will free up but should eventually be replaced.I hope this helped.Good Luck

05 wideglide starter will not turn over but bike will start on a push start. replaced starter relay and no better

Look at the end of your starter from the right side of the bike. You'll see a pentagon shaped plate held on with there small screws. There's a single wire connection at the top of the plate. Unplug the wire and connect a test light or a volt meter to the wire. Turn on the ignition switch and press the start button. The test light should light up or the meter should show battery voltage. If it does, your problem is in the starter. If it does not, your problem is electrical. This wire comes straight from the starter relay and it energizes your solenoid.

1979 harley won't start .... nothing happens at all when i try to start it

If your bike isn't doing anything, it sounds like you may have something wired up incorrectly. Didn't I send you a wiring schematic for that bike off forum?

Anyway, to start off trouble shooting the problem, take a test light and touch the small terminal on the end of the starter solenoid. When you press the start button, you should have power there. If so, you have something wrong with your starter solenoid.

If you do not have any voltage at this point, you may have a problem with the starter relay. The relay should be a round relay with three terminal connections on it as well. When you turn the switch on, the large terninal with the two red wires on it should have voltage on it. Now, there are two other wires that go on the relay and both are black. When you press the start button, one of the black wires should have voltage on it. This wire should go to the small terminal on the relay. The other black wires runs from the remaining large terminal on the starter relay to the small terminal on the starter solenoid.

When you press the start button, the black wire running to the small terminal on the starter relay goes "hot" and energizes the relay. When the relay closes, the large terminal with the black wire on it goes "hot" sending voltage to the small terminal on the starter solenoid. This energizes the solenoid and pulls in the starter motor.

On the starter solenoid, there are two large terminals. The longer terminal is where the large battery cable connects. The shorter large terminal is where the cable that runs to the starter connects.

Check all of this and let me know what you find and we'll go from there.

Horn not working looking for fuse

First check fuse then relay. If trouble finding obtain repair manual.
Basic diagnostic method is to start at the horn(s). There should be two wires. One is negative the other positive. If connections good. You will need a voltage tester and a jumper lead. A simple 12 volt bulb can be used as a tester. Pull one of the horn wires and attach tester then attach other tester lead to negative. Test horn. If no indication repeat with other horn wire (don't confuse horn connections). If voltage present Horn defective. Next check for voltage at relay. If voltage in to relay but not out replace relay. If no voltage in to relay replace fuse. If still not found then problem is with horn switch or wires between.
