Misses at cruizing speeds when engine gets warm. accels ok

2002 HD soft tail Herritage Classic. At start up engine stalled frequently and has a cough or miss at cruizing speeds. appears like ignition may be cutting out. Had to run with enricher at 1/2 position even when engine was warm. Adjusted idle speed. Idle ok and can run with enricher in when warm, but still has cough at cruizing speed. Accelleration is fine.

Sounds like drumbanger is on the right track. If this bike ran ok in the past and you have not made exhaust or intake changes, the low speed jet may be partially plugged or you have developed an intake air leak. If this problem has always been there or you have changed something, consider going up a size or 2 on the low speed jet.

Engine misses, bad idle, stalls, no power, accelerator to the floor & no action

Check out the ignition module or ESC for proper operation. It works in conjunction with your ecm to control and regulate engine timing.

it is done completly by electric connection..? on a 92 pick up i belive it still has a speedo cable located at the tail of the tranny.. either the gear is bad or the cable is broken ..if it has cruize control there are two cables one tranny to cruize box and then cruize box to speedo

I recently purchased a 2002 lowrider with only319 miles on it obviously it has sat awhile. It has a hard time idling on initial warm up and when warmed up giving it a little throttle (not under load) it...

The bike may suffer from a combo of the gas going stale in the carb, and may have slightly clogged the small passageways, but if it starts and runs you are halfway there. Use some carb or fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank to help out there. As far as cold start, it may be from a lean condition form the factory, and the coughing and popping are symptomatic of that. If you have a good HD shop nearby, they should be able to change the slow speed up just a bit, to pretty much take care of the issue of coughing, popping and cold start issues. My bike was the same, I bumped the low speed jet up , but still have a cold blooded bike, it takes a while to run properly form cold start, and will pop if driven too soon or if it is cold out until she warms up good. Some advice for cold start, use the choke know as usual, then push in the choke as soon as you can, and use the throttle to keep RPMs up about 1000 using throttle lock to RPMs there. As the motor warms up RPMs will increase on their own and you can adjust the RPMs lower as motor warms using throttle and throttle lock. Use your hand to touch the heads, as the motor warms up you'll feel heat, when she's too hot too touch, she is ready to ride. See you in the wind.

Cold starts ok warms up shakes and stalls

check engine coolant temperature when it gets warmer, or at operating temperature, and verify that the temperature gauge is showing warmed up to operating temperature. If the coolant temperature sensor tells the computer the engine is cold it will over fuel and miss and the engine will die. When cooled down it will run fine until it warms up. Also could be coil if it starts missing after warmed up.

Not uncommon for a HD to occasionally pop back thru the carb. If intermittent I would not worry about it. If frequent, you probably pinched the diaghragm when you installed it and poked a hole in the rubber. If it's OK, try gettin a kit for the carb that has new jets, slide spring and drills. Thunderslide or Yost power tube works well. If not available in your area, re-jet the slow speed jet to a 45 or 48. Leave the main alone. Enlarge the hole in the slide to 1/8". NOT the hole for the needle!! It's right beside it. Remove the carb for the next modifications...Remove the plug in the idle screw well. (Located under the carb close to the intake manifold. A tall skinny tube running off the carb body.) Drill a hole in the plug and use a screw and pliers to remove it. Re-install carb. Turn the idle mix screw (with a skinny screwdriver) until you get a good idle with the engine hot. Re-adjust idle speed to about 1000 rpm.

sounds like you are suffering from low fuel pressure, with a proper gauge you can check to be certian that you have addaquit pressure. at idle you should have 14-18 psi.
