I recently purchased a 2002 Harley Wide Glide and noticed my fuel guages goes from full to empty pretty quick. I know the bike has a 5 gallon tank but when almost on empty I can only get a little over 2 gallons in it.

Check for good ground on the gauge and sender units as a first check.

You might try mixing some SeaFoam fuel additive with the fuel. That might work or therewise, you're going to have to drain the tank. How you do that on an EFI equipped bike, I have no idea as I work only on carb equipped bikes. Good Luck!

The vent between the tanks is located under the tank panel. The fuel vent is in the right side gas cap. Did you check to make sure fuel was flowing out of the right tank while you had the crossover hose off?

Good Luck

Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a cursory reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
18. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
19. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
20. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections are loose or connected to the wrong cylinders.

22. Faulty neutral, clutch, kickstand safety switch.
23. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
24. Faulty or corroded run/stop switch.

Fuel reserve tank

OFF whenever engine is off
ON during normal running
Fuel when bike starts jerking, because of running out of fuel. Turns on RESERVE (about 1/2 gallon left).

2007 Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide fuel pump diagnosis @

Hi, Anonymous the following is a systematic procedure for diagnosing fuel pump issues designed to keep "DRACHMA" to a minimum:
1. Normal fuel pump pressure is 55-62 PSI.
2. Check the white plastic convoluted tubing for age-related pinholes by removing and plugging the end that connects to the quick disconnect check valve and then turn on the ignition switch and look for fuel streams exiting the pinholes, if any exist, replace tubing as necessary. $38 from Harley $20 from eBay.
3. Check for a clogged primary fuel filter that comes off the bottom of the pump to screen out big rocks and clean as necessary.
4. Check for a clogged secondary fuel filter by removing it from the system and replace it with a short splicing tube turn on the ignition switch and recheck fuel pressure if pressure increases to the normal pressure you need a new filter $ 166 from Harley $40 from Drag Specialties on eBay.
5. If all the above check out OK then you need a new fuel pump $ 324 from Harley $ 60 from Amazon and eBay.

The fuel gauge indicator will peg on full when the bike is turned on, but will then swing erratically as the bike is ridden. The bike is an '02 Electra Glide Standard.

If you will contact me directly at [email protected] I'll send you a complete trouble shooting guide to a fuel gauge. It's for Dyna Wide Glide but it should be the same gauge just mounted a bit different. Don't forget to remind me of what you need.

Good Luck

Fuel guage shows full all the time

It sounds as if your guage is grounded out. Check the electrical lines from your guage to the tank sender to see if one of them is cut or damaged and is grounding out to the frame of the bike.

2002 Dyna wide glide. Will not IDLE

not running for a year! You have a varnish buildup in the low end circuit of the carb. You will need to remove the carb and do a full teardown of the carb to properly rectify this problem. SOMETIMES we are able to free up the passages by putting SEA FOAM cleaner in the tank , fill her up with fresh fuel and ride through the tank and it will clear up. SEA FOAM can be purchased at an auto parts store and is sometimes very effective. 1/4 cup to full tank fuel.
