Overheating yz250f New to this site and looking for some answers relating to overheating of yz250f, i,am pretty much novice to 4 stroke mx bikes and have just recently taken delivery of yz250f which on starting at the weekend overheated after riding for max 10 mins - to the point it blew the cylinder head breather off the retaining clip and dumped coolant likewise from overflow pipe. Not exactly sure whats going on here although i suspect problem with the water / coolant pump / seal bearings !!! Would appreciate any feedback support from any other yzf riders whom have experienced similar problems. Advance thanks...

You will find it is generally a well engineered thing, most of the weak points are electrical. There are many threads here concerning ignition pick up coil failure and HT coil failure. Pick up coil problems usually involve the bike cutting out when its warm and re-starting when its cold. HT coil problems bring about rough running. There is a bolt in the alternator drive which is prone to failure, it will manifest itself as a rattle from the top left of the engine when it is idling. Triumph have a kit of re-designed parts to fix it. I get thoroughly bored with the brake calipers, they are forever seizing / binding. Either the sliding body binding on its pins or a piston binding on the dust seal. I have that problem right now and it needs fixing (again). It is one thing that puts me off uprating the calipers, twice as many pistons to seize as there are now. (dont have this problem with the Lockheed or Brembo calipers on other bikes). This is on a bike that is used every day. You may find that on a bike of that age that the rubber petrol pipes and vacuum hoses will have hardened and may leak or split when you disconnect them, that may cause bad running or cause the petrol tap not to open due to poor vacuum. I have had trouble with wear in the carbs, but parts were replaced and it is now OK. Mikuni carb. bikes are thirsty, expect low 30s mpg. I have also been through several sets of wheel bearings over the years, but they are easy enough to replace. I have not modified my bike, it is still largely as it left the factory (apart from some grime and rust).

Make sure there is nothing blocking the air flow in front of the radiator, it could be something small covering it to make these cars overheat. Ive had the same problem in the past.

Well you need to verify the stuff already mentioned. Sparkplug, and coil etc.
The problem is likely the the coil and just needs to be replaced.
If the plug show signs of lean mix, it could have been that way for a long time (big headache).
If you just got the bike you need to kown something about troubleshooting to isolate the issue.
Makesure the oil is up. - too low could lead to a scrapped engine.
Makesure the oilpump is working.- no pump means no oil moving will lead to a scrapped engine.
Makesure you have the correct oil by doing an oil change. - bad, wrong, really old oil could mess the filter(clogged). Check filter for grit, metal, cream - if I have to explain why... then you need to give up trying to fix it yourself and pay/pay/pay for someone who has the skills to fix it for you.

If you must do it yourself, buy the Clymer manual and read.
Search the net and learn.
Get a friend to help show you how to troubleshoot the issue and fix it.

ok, its time for a radiator flush. there is major sludge in the internals of this radiator. Make sure the thermostat is in the correct position as well. I've seen many cars come into my shop with the thermostat inserted backwards.

It all seems to be leading to fuel starvation. Have you checked the tank breather is not blocked which can be a small hole in the petrol cap or a tube from under the tank. It could also be a blocked fuel filter. There should be two. One inside the fuel tank under the petcock, another before the fuel pump. Here is the workshop manual where you can find all info you will ever need for this bike.

Bought a new YZ250F and can not start have tries

4-strokes can be notoriously hard to start. I can tell you that re-jetting the carb can make a huge difference - perhaps consult your local dealer for their recommendations for your riding area. Jets are cheap and relatively easy to change.

OVERHEATING 2000 YZ80

ya i have a yz250f and learned from a first hand experience that any racebike 2 stroke or 4 stroke doesnt like to idle for a few minutes without moviing. i started up my bike and let it sit for 8 minutes to warm up and antifreeze started spewing out. so i cut it off and called a friend that races. he told me these bikes need air moving through them otherwise they overheat easily and the antifreeze over flows because it expands. if i actually read the manual the book says not to let the bike stand and idle for more then 3 minutes cause after that amount of time it should already be warmed up.
so its just the bike over heating and make sure to top off your coolant the next time u ride
