Yamaha snowmobile starting issue

When starting sled with electric start, the starter works the first time, however, subsequent attempts fail; i.e. no click, no starter engagement. Sled will start manually and run. After riding or letting it sit for awhile (overnight)sometimes the electric start works again and sometimes it does not.

Check for power to starter w/ testlight when you press start button.if none check for power at starter side of starter solenoid when pressing start button.if none take large screwdriver and wedge between both solenoid posts creating contact w/ key swich on. motor should crank.if it does -starter is good. chek small wire coming out of solenoid for power w/ test light when pressing start,if none check start button contacts or power coming from key switch or wiring from start button to solenoid. if power is at small wire when pressing button but no crank-solenoid is bad.

Can you provide me with the year of my Yamaha snowmobile based on the model or serial number?

Hi, Andrew for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. Starter engages while the motor is running

Hi, William the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Jake, if your ignition is electronic, you may not have enough system voltage to run the starter and the ignition at the same time.
Try with a jump from another vehicle. Likely it will start.
Try bringing the battery to a full and complete charge, water up first,
then retest starting. Some units just have to have a perfect battery and state of charge.

I have a 1979 yamaha 340 enticer.Recently it would not start, no spark. I tried new plugs and a new ignition coil but still no spark. Don't know what to do next.

Hi, Gmgroot and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
6. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

My Yamaha XT 600E has had a starting problem for some time now and this morning it just failed to start. The electrical starter simply does not turn the engine. Usually when I have these kinds of problems...

I think I would start with the safety lock out switches ie does the bike have a switch that stops you from starting the machine with the kick stand down? Or the neutral safety switch or the kill switch. You are going to have to go and get a 12 volt meter or a test lamp and follow the power from the battery to the switch, out and in of these various switches.I agree 100% that this is electrical in nature.Don't forget to check the starter solenoid as well.Good Luck

It doesn't sound like a carb problem to me. If the bike will not turn over when pressing the starter button, the problem is electrical and tied to the starter solinoid, starter button, starter motor or wire connections.

Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

Could be a starter issue, or a wiring issue. Check for power at the starter when the button is pressed. If you have power, you need a starter, if not, trouble shoot the electrical system.
