If it starts up after sitting for a few minutes, (like 2 or 3) it could have a plugged fuel filter or the gas tank strainer built into the fuel valve could be plugged too. Drain the gastank anyway and change the gas with fresh. can't hurt. If it takes 15-30 minutes or after the bike cools some I would look at an ignition coil. Check to see if it has spark next time it quits.
SOURCE: 2002 buell blast is running rough - missing - backfiring
Wow, my 2002 blast is doing the same thing, or at least it was untill it blew a hole through the exhaust and quit running all together. Time for a sportster.
Take the bowl off of the carb and clean it. This should remove all old gas and varnish buildup and it should work now.

I did completely disassemble the carb. Jets pulled needle pulled diaphragm inspected. Fuel lines are clean. There is no fuel filter however I installed a small inline fuel filter between the petcock and the carb. I have ran 4 tanks of fuel after the installation and filter is clean. Plug has been inspected twice and plug comes out with the proper burn color (light rusty brown).
I ran Lucas in each tank of fuel. The response has improved but the problem still exist. Approx. 60mph and up bike shuts down. It started with acting like it was starved for fuel and now just dies. Air filter is dirty but not bad. I also tried running without the air filter and still did the same thing.
