Interesting.
You may need a wiring diagram for the engine.
Unplugging the regulator turns off the alternator which should not affect the ignition system. Unless it is over charging somehow. Or the alternator load on the engine is causing a missfire to be worse.
Its possible you have a ground problem somewhere too.

SOURCE: Toyota 02 is stalling, won't idle

Check the voltage of battery with voltmeter.. It is sometimes possible that if voltage of battery drops and jump start is needed, your computer will only charge to the last voltage that was recognized which would be when jumped...Try and charge the battery if possible I would actually suggest that you have your battery tested at local auto parts store and if it is presumed in good condition ,let them charge for you to max capacity . If battery has been tested and labeled as no good replace if necessary... Oh, and first thing you should do is make sure your positive and negative battery connections are clean and tight...if this didnt fix problem please give more info on what was found when advice above was followed...Good Luck!!!!

SOURCE: 2002 Toyota Tundra Stalls

The throttle body needs cleaning. It has some carbon build up, and when the battery went dead the computer lost its learned values, one of which is base throttle position. Now its reset back to factory specs, not accounting for a dirty throttle body. Seen it a million times

SOURCE: 1994 toyota corolla has a runs rough at idle and

I have a similar problem with one of my Toyota Corollas. It's a 95 model with the 1.8L engine (7A-FE, automatic). But unlike yours, it has plenty of power while running. Here's what it does. Occasionally the engine misses. Sometimes it will die. This is most likely to happen when you start the car and put it in reverse and start rolling without giving the engine time to adjust. I've been told by some customers that it will die sometimes when coming to a stop. But this has never happened when I drive it. I don't think it's a fuel issue because the car runs just fine when it's running.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Replaced spark plugs and wires.
  2. Used gasoline additive fuel injector cleaner.
  3. Checked air filter.
  4. Checked vacuum hoses for leaks.
  5. Replaced PCV valve and hoses.
  6. Cleaned the air intake and throttle body with carburetor cleaner.
So far there is no change in the problem.

What I plan to do next:
  1. Check the throttle position sensor.
  2. Check the MAF sensor.
  3. Adjust the idle via the set screw.

After that I have no idea what to do next if the problem persists. The check engine light is not on so I don't think there are any error codes. Will let you know.

SOURCE: i am not getting power to my fuel pump

on a lot of ford products there is a switch that goes from the fuel pump to the inside of one of the bedsides.
what this is, is a shock switch that turns the fuel pump off if it absorbs a hit.
its a really dumb safety feature but its effective.
there is a red button on it that u have to press to make it active again.
sometimes they just trip for no reason.

Will a bad water temp sensor cause a 1999 ford ranger 2.5l to flood and pop back through air filter

Hi. I read your symptoms and want to suggest a timing issue. It is possible that your engine has a bad/bent intake valve. A compression test would confirm that. I recommend running some diagnostics and take a look at the timing. If you did have a fuel or ignition issue. The raw fuel would build in the exhaust and you would hear the exhaust popping and smell the unburned gas. To pop through the intake would be a valve or timing problem. Please write back if I there is anything else. Good Luck.

1988 ford ranger fuel pumps both come on for 2 seconds and go off.\r\nevery time i turn the key this happens. can i wire the pumps to a hot wire whenever the key is on they will run?

the pumps should run for a couple of seconds then shut off when the regulator determines the fuel pressure is correct. If you wire it, it will probably shorten the life of the regulator since pressure will constantly be applied to the regulator.

1988 ford ranger ( 4 cyl ) Fuel pump kicks on, motor starts and runs approx. 5 to10 min. and dies. Turn key back on and can't here fuel pump.

It sounds like your fuel pump is overheating. Once it gets too hot the bearings swell and the pump locks up. When it cools, they contract and the pump works again. It is also possible the fuel pump relay is having a thermal failure. You can determine this by hooking a voltmeter into the fuel pump supply wire and keep it where you can see it while it is running. If the voltage goes down and then the truck stalls, it would be the relay, if the voltage goes down after the truck stalls, it would be the fuel pump. Since the pump is only running when the engine is running, once the engine dies it'll turn off the fuel pump so it is important to pay attention to what happens first.

Sounds like it may be a fuel problem. Have you changed the fuel filter recently ?

1988 ford ranger 4 speed v6 problems keeping it running.

Fuel filter? There's also a filter on the suction intake inside the gas tank, it can get plugged up. I'd definitely try the filter if you haven't. Good luck. Have you checked the fuel psi coming from the tank? If it's fuel injection, it should be pretty high, 55 - 60 psi. Let me know if I can help.
