Greetings:
I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee, 4.0, all electric, and can-not get it to start. I have installed a new ignition switch - and new battery (500 CCA) - and tested the starter/solenoid, tested ok. I have also Ohm Tested the Starter Relay - tested ok.
At this point, I hear a click in two seperate places when attempting to start the engine - (1) at the solenoid - (2) somewhere close to the rotor cap - but perhaps further back - toward the rear of the engine - its hard to identify exactly where this second click is coming from.
If anyone can help - please please give this weekend warrior a hand.
Thank you....
2nd click could be fuel pump engaging...what about the fuses under the hood... is there gas getting to the engine?? is there a safety shut off switch that needs resetting? have you checked the ground wire?
If the starter solenoid is clicking then you have a signal to it.most likely a bad starter.you can bench test a starter and it be ok but when on engine doesnt have enuff to crank motor
With a helper, try these 2 things: with a test lite at the small signal wire on the starter, have helper attempt to start and see if test lite lites up. if so, give starter a light rap with hammer while helper is holding key in start position. if starts then replace starter. make sure all connections at starter and battery are tight. make sure gear shift all the way in park. (try neutral too). the large wire on starter is supposed to supply full time battery power. please reply back with results if i can help further
