SOURCE: how do you remove seat from yamaha virago 1985,

There should be a key lock on the right side of the bike about half way back from the front of the seat. Put the ignition key in and turn it.The seat should lift up and you shuold see a 4 to 6 bolts holding it to the frame.

SOURCE: 1985 yamaha xv 1000 starter turs over but will not engage

Can you hear it spin or not? If it is spinning, the starter clutch gears are out. If you cannot, make sure there is power getting to it when the button is pressed. If so, you need a starter, if not, you need to trouble shoot the electrical system.

I have no history on this 1990 virago I bought yesterday. Its been stood for I don't know how long. Checks out ok but starter button doesnt work

There are a few safety interlocks on most Yamaha street bikes.
The starter circuit will only operate if:
the bike is in neutral and the neutral light indicates this OR
if the bike is in gear (or neutral light not showing) you must have the clutch pulled in and the sidestand must be up (there is a clutch lever switch and a sidestand switch )
The engine stop switch "kill switch" on right handlebar has to be in the RUN position to allow starter cranking.
