1997 protege has power but wont turn over

Vehicle has power but wont turn over, just clicks. I changed the neutral safety switch and the brake lights work when I press the brakes so I dont think its the Brake light switch. This all started with the car being stuck in park and the key stuck in the ignition. I quickly fixed those two problems but the car still wont start. Any ideas?

SOURCE: Clicking from under drivers seat

I could not find out what is under the drivers seat that would click. But with all the electrical malfunctions, I suspect it is the Body Control Module, or computer. This is not to be confused with the Engine Control Computer. Look under the seat with a flashlight and see if there is a small box mounted to the floor. If fit is the BCM, it could be the cause of the electrical problems. The gearshift stuck in park is probably the brake/transmission interlock, or the neutral safety switch. Look for any blown fuses. Is your car a column shift or console shifter?

SOURCE: check engine light on; ABS/Parking Brake light on - 02' Protege 5

If you live in the US, you can take your car to an Auto Zone store and they will read off the diagnostic code that is causing the check engine lamp to come on. Once you have that then you can decide your next course of action.

Hope this is of some help.

SOURCE: my brake lights wont work

Just had a similar problem. Brake (stop) lights and horn didn't work. Couldn't find mention of stop lights in fuse chart. Found horn fuse to be slot 21 in the engine fuse block (not the fuse block in car interior). Replaced 15A fuse and all now ok.

97 Maxda Protege starter engages automaticly in park or neutral with key in ON position

You've pretty much answered your own question, although I doubt it's demons...LOL. Ign switch, nuetral safety or park switch, shorted starter, could be chaffed wiring. If your in the ON position and the starter engages, I'd be looking at the ign wire from the switch to the starter solenoid and or relay. Your car is 20 years old so anything is possible at this point. Your best bet is to go to ALLDATA>COM and buy the wiring schematics for your car grab a DVM and start checking your circuits.

My 1997 Nissan Quest wont start. I don't hear any clicking or anything when I turn the key. The lights and power windows work fine. Tried jump starting the van but same result. Does this sound like a...

My guess would be a switch (park interlock, brake interlock, etc.), a main fuse (located under the hood), or a starter solenoid. One easy check is to turn the key to start and simultaneously wiggle the shifter or pull it in to the Neutral position.

Good luck.

My car only starts when i cross wire the neutral safety switch. i recently changed out the ignition and it ran for about 3 weeks now nothing! wont turn over at all not even a click (unnless i cross wire...

if your starting the car,by only jumping a wire at the neutral switch, then you more than likely have a bad neutral safety switch that needs to be replaced.

My back up lights wont work on my 97 dodge neon, i changed the fuse and the light bulbs, now what? help please

Hi!!
What controls the Back Up Lights is the Neutral Safety Switch/Back Up Switch, located on the transmission shifter (engine compartment). Check for 12v+ coming in from the fuse box to the Neutral Safety Switch, if OK, check for 12v+ out of the wire going to the back up lights when in Reverse, if no power, replace switch, if there is power, check wiring from switch to back up lights.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Changed automatic trans. shift cable now starter wont ingauge to start what chould be the cause.

Look for connector off neutral safety switch, or linkage needs adjustment. Try moving shifter while holding key to start, that should be a good indication if it turns over when in another gear, but be careful and make sure foot is firmly on brake.

Engine wont turn over, put new starter in, think its the neutral safety switch

Check for 12v --power - to the small wire on the start solenoid on the starter with someone turning the key to start.
If there is no power to that wire--yes could be your neutral switch at fault,
Did you try start in neutral ? with brakes on off-course!
If it does start then it is your neutral switch.

My 1997 monte carlo wont start

Most likely a bad starter.
Less likely a wiring problem.
