Started last year when bike got soaked at bike fest. Low beam and spots went out. Replaced head light, worked for a while on low & high beam then low beam went out again. Now high beam has gone out. Just hooked up new bulbs on both and they all work. Afraid its just gonna eat up these too and don't want to keep buying replacement bulbs. Could there by a short or something causing the bulbs to burn out so quickly?
Dale is right on it but a good idea would be to separate all your harness plugs and check for corrosion etc. There's a product called ACF-50 which comes in aerosol or grease that prevents corrosion in electrical plugs. Check it out online?
A good start would be to check the VOLTAGE at the headlight. If at any time the voltage exceeds 14V (at all engine RPMs), replace the voltage regulator.

Locate & route Black lead to ground / 2004-later softail: On the frame strap under the seat directly in front of the battery.
Locate & route the pink lead to Signal / For 2004 & later FXST/C/I The #3 cavity in the connector {39b} on the back of the speedometer. The socket terminal on the signal (pk) lead fits the #3 cavity.
Locate & route the Orange and white lead to power / Ummm.. it's saying for 2004 and later to adapt to the fuse block For earlier [ For 1996 to 2003 softail: locate the power lead (o/w) in the tail lamp pin connector {7a} under the seat behind the right rear corner of he battery.] "here you are looking to run it to a fused line, not directly to power/battery" I hope this helped.

Fuel clog in carb or injector, or the magnetic pick up for the electronic ignition.....the spark plugs need to be checked also....lots of variables, but thats a start
