Getting my 2001 yz 426 started

I just recently got a 426, and I'm having trouble getting it started. The guy I got it from changed the decompression lever to aftermarket, and there is just no leverage to push it in. I've started it a few times, and even changed the plug. What's the trick?

You should bring piston to top dead center. Then once the kick won't move

any more simply pull in your decompression lever until the kick start move

1 inch past top dead center or 1 inch of travel on the kick start. If the bike is cold remember to always use the choke. If the bike is hot try this twice and if no start use the HOT start. Under normal conditions you should not have to use the HOT start unless the bike has stalled or been upside down. If you have no confidence in the bike once you have it running you can always turn the idle up.

just so you know sheldon on yamahas you can not kick the bike without pulling in the decompresion lever

Can you please be a little more specific on where your having the problem? Is it with the decompression lever or the technique in getting it started? There are some tricks to starting it but I need to know which problem you are having first.

they are finiky...run a hotter plug, do not use ethanol based fuel, take carb off and clean out varnish, replace plug, spray starter fluid in plug area and it will start...always take fuel out of tank if sitting more than a week.

Hold the decompression lever in and kick it slow then let go of the decompression lever and give it a good kick without using the decompression lever.

I installed a Hot Cam and mine starts easy now. No more need for decompression lever and no power loss. About $200

Bike sat up for 3 or 4 years. recently cleaned the carb, changed the plug and oil and bike started. Tried starting it recently and it wont. Seem to be backfiring sometimes when kicking it over.

clean plug .. although new plug if old fuel or unbalanced carb it may quickly foul. if this works you may need help to work out whats causing plug to foul.
