Misfiring 2000 sporty 1200

Ok i changed out the ignition coil to a screaming eagle and 8 gauge spark plug wires. since then when i try to go wide open my bike misses if i let off a little it will to continue to accelerate but i assume this is more of a problem than not being able to accelerate as fast as before the upgrade.
if you have any ideas please let me know.

i have the split fire screaming eagle plugs.
the new coil raised the rev limiter to 6800 will that make a difference?

  • jeramiwood Dec 05, 2008

    i have a carb

no i dont know how to ready the plugs. i just check gap and install.

is there something else to do?

  • jeramiwood Dec 05, 2008

no, i never jetted it,but i didn't buy it new either. it came with the k&n high air flow filter which i cleaned while i was doing the repairs/ upgrades. it also has the screaming eagle exhaust system. was told just tips cause there is a cross over bar, but not sure.
ever since i bought it have had a bad backfiring problem spoke with everyone from harley davidson to random motorcycle repair shops about that and was told it is the nature of a harley with a carb.
about it running too hot right now it is running really rich i smell unburned gas while i am at an idle. i am planning on trying new plugs this afternoon when i get home i will let you know if that has any effect.

  • jeramiwood Dec 10, 2008

well i tried the new plugs and it cleared up a little bit. the back firing is gone unless i try and go wide open then it will back fire a little. it has to either be starving for gas or flooding out and i havent figured out which yet. thank for all you help.

my 92 fxr runs red hot on just the front pot any ideas

  • Tom Diffin May 11, 2010

when you cleaned the air filter you didnt put oil on it did you and the ign box has the 6800 rev limit not the coil sounds like the rich (fat)carb blues if you smell gas at idle its rich and if when you let the throttle of bike seems to accelreate that to suggests a rich carb didnt say which carb it is

Sorry, but I am a real stick in the mud on this kind of stuff. If your new plug wires are braided, throw them away and put the originals back on. Put the stock plugs in and forget those split fire junkers, the theory is not even any good. It sounds like the spark is blowing out under compression. Fancy spark plugs and wires and all that nonsense will not gain you 1 horsepower. The sceamin' eagle ignition module is the same as stock, except for the rev limit, so it's ok. Really, some of these after market plug wires are inferior and the braided ones can act like a kill switch.

Try replacing your plugs with Autolite's. make sure to get the right size for your bike. See if that makes a difference.

everyone has their opinions, but i havent had good luck with splitfires. I'd suggest goin to your local autoparts store and investing 3.00 in some autolites... what the heck - if it doesnt work, put the splitfires back..... dont replace more than one thing at a time.... or ya wont know what the problem was...... (6800 should be fine)

One more thing - it seems you've tweaked that ride quite a bit ...... u have a carb on that bike or is it injected .... u may not be getting enough fuel ........ do u know how to ready your plugs.... it could be running hot

sorry bud.... mis print I my end..... I meant "read" the plugs...my concern is its running too hot

Have u ever changed the main jet ? .. It could be a fuel/air problem. Are u running a stock airfilter. ?

I cant agree with the experts. I have a carberated dyna with 75,000 miles which doesnt backfire at all. I rebuilt it with all new rubber/hoses/gaskets etc. and that took care of it. But if your running rich.... u need more airflow. U might also check your maniold for a tight connection. I'm sure you'll figure this out

you have dual coils swap them to see if the problem moves to the front cylinder, if so get a new one.

Check engine light on momentarily

you can rest the warning by unhooking the pos.+ batt. cable but it should be change in the programming so it does return. Mine does the same and keeps giving what HD calls a historic code miss fire on 1 coil. Some times it can be something as simple as aftermarket plug wires.
