No, but it is the easiest way. i dropped the engine out of mine in about 45 min. with a floor jack and some hand tools. The only special item i had was the most excellent honda workshop manual. i took mine out going after the stator, and its right next to the clutch. i looked at the clutch and decided this was the best way for this as well. in-chassis clutch work would involve removal of the fuel cell, swing arm and all components attached to them (pain).

Note, try this... on this bike it is actually easier to lay the bike on the side to remove the engine or just get to things like the stator and clutch. Because of the mounting system, much easier to align everything when reassembling them this way. No floor jack needed.

Customer has 1984 GL 1200 Goldwing with clutch problems, is this hydraulic system & how does it operate?

It operates exactly like an automotive system. DOT 3/4 brake fluid is put into the reservoir on the handle bar left side master cylinder assembly and bled out at the slave cylinder on the round clutch cover on the backside of the motor in front of the rear wheel. Both the master cylinder rebuild kit and the rear slave cylinder kit are available from a Honda if needed. Some times a simple bleeding will fix the problem. If you can not build pressure in the master cylinder , try loosening the banjo bolt and pump the clutch lever until you get fluid pressure causes leaking past the copper washers. Then tighten the banjo bolt on the master cylinder and bleed the slave cylinder. On some Goldwing's the clutch cover can be removed and the clutch plates can be replaced with the engine still in the frame. Unfortunately. the spring towers can easily be broken if you are not extremely careful.

Hi, have an 86 honda goldwing interstate that wont engage. do you hve any's a bike my dad left me and i would really love to ride it again......

For my 1980 Goldwing I changed the clutch cable as it had stretched. Also do frequent oil changes because the engine oil also lubricates the transmission. My left hand grip had also worn a bit where the pin fits so I replaced it when I did the cable.

How do I remove the radio from the fairing on a 86 goldwing

In between the radio and the digital clock you will see a key hole. Using the ignition key, this will unlock the raio cassette unit and you can pull the entire unit out of the fairing. There are no bare wires, only copper contacts. By bending each of the contacts at the rear of the unit out a little, you may have better contact when the unit is inserted again. The contacts do become compressed over time and this might solve your problem.
