Backfiring through a carb is indicative of over advanced ignition. The spark is firing the fuel too early and exploding through the carburettor, instead of firing the piston over Top Dead Centre (TDC).
Another possibility is a damaged valve, do a compression test and get the timing checked.
sounds like there is a wire that has been exposed and shorting out . as electricity flows through wires they heat up. as temp goes up the insulation around the wire gets soft so if wire gets pulled on or tugged on and there is a sharp metal edge it can cut through insulation and cause a short making certain items turn off.(id say if that's the problem it most likely to be around front of gas tank area. even the slightest indication of a wire that has had the insulation pinched or rubbed off take some electrical tape and apply around compromised area
It can be one of a few things, if the units power is limited now since the belt light came on that its in "belt failure mode" if the light is just on its warning you that its been 100 hours and that your belt need to be checked for wear and servicing. You should have a qualified mechanic look at the belt and then they can reset the belt hour meter.
