Mark, I think that's a fun Idea...You will need a switch or ignition to operate with advice I can offer for a hardwire connection I would go to a local autoparts store and get a simple key operated on/off ignition and install it to where you can have constant power, an on and off position and an accessory switch cost is less than $20 mount it some where easily accessible and out of the way at the same time bc some mounting locatins the key may risk being bent or broken off...

Mate check your spark plug doesn't have any dirt deposits on the centre electrode that will stop it from sparking, If it clear plug it back into the spark plug lead then sit it on your motor and see it if sparks when you turn the motor over, If no spark then it still could be the spark plug or the coil... Good luck....

1990 dr 250s(street) switching back to dirt only. what electrical do I have to leave on the bike for it to start. I have removed lights and horn. Removing the wiring harness and battery.

At a a minimum, you will need the magneto (inside left engine cover), the regulator/rectifier (right side, under seat -- has fins on it), the CDI (under seat, at front of airbox), and enough wiring harness to connect the 3. You should put a large capacitor in place of the battery. You will need to jump the sidestand and clutch safety switches, as removing them will cause a no-start condition.

My 2 stroke trials bike wont start. I thought id gone into reserve tank when the engine just died. Got heaps of compression still when i kick it over and it was running ok up until this point. Do you...

Hi, Christopher and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

How to change the spark plug

i'm not sure what kind of bike your working on but here we go, older sports bikes and in line motors:the best thing to do here is remove the body (if it has one) sometimes you can get the socket in without removing the gas tank. best if you do tho it WILL make it easier.New sport bikes: start with the seat remove it then the tank now the airbox, after you have all this apart you should be able to get into the spark plug caps. Be careful here because most of the new bikes use a cap the also acts like the coil, it will have a plug with two wires remove that from the cap and remove the cap from the motor. take your time do one at a time and put it back together they the you took it apart. v twin bikes like harlys and bikes that look like then will have the spark plugs on the side of the motor sometimes under covers that may pull off or have screws. World of powersports is a site that shows micro phish. this is a part break down that you can use to find part numbers and where things are at in the bike.
Good luck my friend

Cold starting problems 1981 yamaha maxim 400

could be a few things going on . have you checked the vacuum lines? could have one plugged or collapsed? Could be a carb problem? have you installed a carb kit yet ? or you could try a hotter spark plug.

My 50cc mini bike starts then dies 5 secs after starting. why?

It sounds like you may have 2 problems

  • Bad gas
  • dpossible loose spark plug( bad compression)

dump out the gas put new in
Remove the spar plug and examine the plug if it is wet and black it is fouled
if it is white ad dry it is not getting gas

If you can replace the spark plug if not just clean it with a wire brush put back in and tighten

Finally make sure the spark plug wire is not lose

Best of luck to you
