My Camry speedometer is intermittent

Speedometer goes off (to zero) as well as the odometer ONLY when the inside of the vehicle is hot. In cool mornings it works fine but in hot afternoons both go to zero. After the inside of the car cools (with A/C), they come back to operation. Replaced the speed sensor but still have the intermittent problem. Any ideas?

    I have the absolutely identical problem in a 1998 Camry. Speedometer and Odometer start out OK. Later in the day, after the has been sitting in the heat, odometer and speedometer gone and check engine light comes on. Sometimes cures itself after driving a while. Seeing it less as fall weather cools things off.

    i have same problem but chick Speed sensor also but nothing happen and morning its ok and some time speedo meeter go up and down thats why problem is auto gair change

I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Camry but i've been driving on this condition for a couple months. What long term damage can this cause? Also, Good year is trying to charge me about 500 dollars to get this problem fixed. Is that a normal price for this repair?

anne, it sounds to me like dampness in the ignition process, if the engine is turning over at the turn of the key,then check the rubber ring seal inside your distributer cap(thats the coloured plastic cap with all the leads to the spark plugs) if its perished or showing signs of distortion,replace the whole cap. if its seems ok then try starting your engine at night or at least grey dark,open the bonnet and watch for sparks coming from any of the HT leads ( cable like things) that go to the spark plugs.If present either spray with "sparkseal"(short term solution) or replace the leads.Try this and if it doesn,t solve it , get in touch ok?

try replacing the fuel cervo... this maybe the cause of faulty run. a backyard auto technician can replace this without charging you much. hope this helps

SOURCE: Sluggish transmission engagement. Traveling at

changing your VSS is easy , the hardest part is finding it...look around the housing near your CV axles..the differential in there near there is a 8 or 10mm bolt holding it in witha wire connector on the end...if you pull it out you will see a plastic gear on the end of the sensor.... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

neoprene gear in transmission were the speedometer cable goes into transmission should not have a dished appearance if you pulll it out of transmission look at it from the side it should appear flat from the start of the gear to end of gear no dish down in center

If the odometer is incrementing mileage, the speedometer unit itself has failed. If the odometer is not incrementing, either the speedometer cable has broken or come disconnected (most likely), or the cog inside the transmission has become damaged.

Transmission speed sensor
You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

May be a bad speed sensor in the transmission. Perform an OBDII scan of the stored fault history.

This may be hard to believe, but it is the circuitry in the instrument cluster. I have (2) 1997 Camry's and one of them had this problem. I swapped instrument clusters with the other camry, then the other camry had the problem.


Buy a used instrument cluster from a junkyard with a 30 day warranty and you should be good to go (though your mileage will be incorrect).
