Running hot? Isnt this an air cooled engine? Have you drained the old fuel and put in fresh fuel? The black on the plug tells me its running rich,and that the carb will probably need to come off and be cleaned out. Also,add a inline fuel filter if at all possible.

Have a 2000 500 quad will start run up but under load it cuts out. runs fine on the flats. when you want to go up hill the engine has no power. could the cam be worn out? in neutral you excelerate it...

Intake at .006 and exhaust at .010 Adjusting needle to sit lower setting leans out your mixture-be careful lean mixtures cause excessive exhaust temps and a huge temperature gradient across your piston crown causing a locked up motor. What does your spark plug look like after riding? this will be a good indicator of how lean or rich you are. black and sooty is rich, caramel is just right, and white or ashy is lean - BAD. Any machine that backfires has either a timing issue, or a valve adjustment issue. You sound mechanically inclined, so double check your clearances. Also, since you mentioned the uphill issue, it could simply be that your fuel level in the carb bowl is just right on the flats, but as you point uphill, it is not right anymore. . .the fuel runs to the back of the carb and cannot be drawn into the main jet because it's not there anymore.

Does it smell rich like gas isn't being burnt and coming out the tail pipe? If so then it's probably the spark plugs. Actually I bet you any money it is. They're cheap and easy to replace, give it a try.

After starting my motor it back fire is timeing off or what on a fj 1200 yamaha

ignition timing should not change(electronic ignition), if it runs reasonable valve timing is probably ok,
back fire can be lean fuel mixture, low voltage, intake leaks, exhaust leaks, tight valve clearance, burnt valve, loose electrical plug on ignition system, shorting cut off switch, including, clutch lock out and side stand switches

Have 1988 honda v45 magna. was running rich, changed the plugs now it won't start

did you correct the running rich issue first . The new plugs will perform even worse if it is still getting to much fuel. Put the old plugs back in , If you can, fire it up and correct the fuel problem first. Chk your air cleaner also. Good luck. I had a v45 and v65 and loved them both.

What octane gas are you using? If octane is to high even with mixed fuel it will cause valves to burn out run to rich....try using lower octane gas, if not you need to adjust fuel mixure...only ned a small screwdriver for this....but try the fuel first...

Hello l have a suzki gs250 82model leaking fuel from rear of the carby (pilot air screw)+the overflow. have checked the float hight needle and seat seems to be cutting the fuel off ok. bike runs but very...

gas leaking out of the overflow tube is definately a float or float tang problem. if you are sure the tang on the float is adjusted probably, then the float may have a hole in it and it is no longer "floating" to shut off the supply of fuel. i'd remove it and submerge it in gas for a bit and look for air bubbles escaping and also see if it no longer floats after you release it from being submerged. if either happens, then replace the float.

running rich is an improperly adjusted air screw, wrong setting on the jet needle (long needle attached to the carb slide with a circlip), clogged airfilter or wrong jet (main or pilot) size. i'd try to find out the settings for these items and adjust accordingly.

Back firing & cutting out

If a stock intruder is running rich it must have a restriction in the air filter or a problem with the carbs. These bike are always way too lean from the factory. Check to make sure the filters are not plugged up. Also if it is truly rich it will start and run well without the choke on. You may have inricheners that need adjusted.
