Question about 2004 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom

1 Answer

Bike won't start.

Doesn't "buzz" when I turn the key on (fuel pump?). Starter turns the engine over. Headlight comes on. Fuses good.

Fuel is in the on(run) position. The bike was cranked up and ran last Thursday. Would not crank Saturday (or since). New tank of gas. No I have not drained the fuel tank. I have not checked the spark plugs.

Thank you. Should I hear the fuel pump come on when I turn the key to the "on" position?

Check the plugs if they are wet there is too much fuel if they are dry and old try replacing them. if they are new and dry it is either not getting enough air or fuel. It is hard for me to know for sure with out seeing the bike

Is the fuel control in the on, reserve, or off position.

Check your plugs, are they wet or dry? New or old?

Have you drained all the fuel at all?

1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty ignition switch.

Hi, Check the solenoid on or near the starter. This is the first thing that comes to my mind. Second is the ignition module. (electronic box) Which controlls spark to the engine. Check those out. Good luck.

I have 1983 Yamaha Virago XV750K. The headlight comes on when the key is turned on. The headlight goes off after the bike is started and running. ???

Yamaha used a starter switch with 2 sets of contacts on many models.
One set opens to shut off the headlight (conserving battery power for cranking) the other closes to energize starter motor.
Problem is the switch gets sticky....so releasing it stops starter, but the headlight doesn't come back on after startiing.
key off, spray some WD40 around the button to get it inside, and work the button in and out...slide your thumb off to let it snap out.
Retry with key on to see if headlight now returns after cranking.

1999 800vs replaced battery when key is turned on to start bike all lights on speedometer light up should be just green neutral.bike just clicks will not turnover

Actually when the key is turned on all the "dash" lights come on neutral, oil, temp and what ever else as soon as the bike starts the lights will go out. If the lights come on while the engine is running then you have a problem or it's in neutral "green".

For the bike not starting a few things, first off the battery even though you say it's new may have been sitting on the shelf for a while and they do loose power so it may need charging. The newer bikes the headlight light comes on when the key is turned on which robs the starting system of power to turn the starter, the batteries need to be good on these bikes or it's just not going to work. If the headlight comes on and looks yellow or amber then there isn't enough power in the battery. If it's a nice bright white light then there is power and the starter may need to be serviced.

If the bike has been sitting over the winter I'd guess the battery has just lost power and requires charging.

Cheers be safe and have fun with your motorcycle

No power, instrument lights or anything, when I turn the key on.

I don't know about the type of bike you have but did you check to see if you hit the shut off switch when your hand slipped? If the only thing you did was have your hand slip on the switch you may have broken the switch.
