Question about Yamaha G5 Motorcycles

Battery goes dead

The battery recently died out riding one night , i barely made it home with really dim yellow lights,even the digital dash went blank. i recharged the battery and everything was fine for two days ,until i noticed the lights getting dimmer according as i was riding . i thought maybe the battery was faulty, so the next day since it wouldnt turn, over i boosted it with my truck. it started right away , so i strapped my trucks battery to the rack and ran two wires connecting both batteries ,then went for a ride. both batteries died , so it is obvious that whatever charges the battery is not working. WHAT PART IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your post/description indicates two possibilities:

  • faulty the voltage regulator (most likely);
  • loose/corroded connectors (likely);
  • faulty alternator/stator (least likely).
Depending on the country of manufacture and/or the country of intended use, the voltage regulator would look something like the image below.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Have to check the voltage regulator for burned wires or yellowed connectors,, also looking over every wire on the bike you can get to would be a good idea,, something could just have rubbed thru the insulation on a wire resulting in a dead short,,, look carefully for the damaged wire,, It could easily be a voltage regulator
We just replaced the reg on a SV650 and that was the trouble,

My Battery died and when I charged it and took a Ride, my Head light began dimming and then the Check engine light came on and Off and then the Computer light went on and Off.I turned around towards home...

It sounds like your alternator is not able to keep the battery charged. That usually means it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. The battery may or may not hold a charge too but the alternator would need to be addressed regardless.

Might have 12.67 volts, but not enough amps to crank engine or light the lights properly. Try putting a charger on the battery, bring it to a full charge. Next, put a load tester on the battery to see if battery is weak or dead cell. If battery checks good, check the charging system. With engine running at idle, put volt meter on battery-read volts, then rev engine to high idle. Volts should climb higher than idle reading.

You have a shorted cell in the battery. Go buy a new battery. When you're trying to start the bike, it's doing so on 10 volts or less. When the voltage drops, the amperage goes sky high. That's why the battery, the cables, and the starter motor are heating up.
Good Luck

It's your stator failing, these bikes are notorious for bad stators. A failing stator means the bike can't produce the electricity it needs to run, and the bike is running on the battery only. Replace the stator and make sure your battery is fully charged and you will be good to go.

First thing to do is charge the battery and do a load test on it. Use a charger rated for motorcycle batterys not a battery tender. Once the battery is charged and tested, you need to test the stator. On the right front down tube at the bottom you will find the plug that goes from the stator to the voltage regulator. I forget the values that you are looking for but with a multi meter and the bike running take a reading at the plug the voltage should climb when you rev the engine. If you do not get any reading or if the voltage dosen't climb you have a bad stator. If the battery and stator are good it will be your voltage regulator.

Everything turns off when I hit the start switch.

Sounds like poor connections on the battery.
