1998 harley davidson softail custom. Need to know the bolt pattern for the primary cover engine/transmission

    Thanks for answering but I was at a loss because I could not locate where the bolt was that was holding it from coming off but I did locate it. I need to find a nut that goes on the transmission main shaft that holds the sprocket on. I just don't like the looks of the one that is on there now. I just got this bike so it is the first time that I have gotten in to taking it apart because I am making it into a trike. Thanks for your help.

    I am having a problem getting the clutch assembly ring gear to line up with the starter gear and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. It looks like the clutch assembly is going in to far into the case. Can you give me some advice. Thanks

    The primary chain is running deeper in the case on the clutch end than it is on the crank end and is traveling on an angle and the ring gear is barley rubbing on the starter gear.What am I doing wrong. Should there be a spacer between the clutch assembly and the main shaft bearing of the transmission?

    Still have not solved the problem and I have taken this thing apart and put it back togeather agan about 3 times and the same problem still exists about the chain not running square. I can take care of the starter problem to not make it rub but i cannot make the chain run even and not on an angle. Cannot figure out what is wrong. It was not that way when I took it apart and the only thing i am doing is changing from a belt to a chain drive and changing the sproket. What are the suggestions?

    yes that is what i am doing. All i did is change the belt sproket to a chain sproket and put everything back the way it came apart and i cannot make the chain travel in a straight line and it is deeper in the primary case than the front sproket on the crank and the ring gear is rubbing on the starter gear. I have been down to the harley dealer and talked to the tech there and went thru the book with him and we still cannot solve the problem. It appears that there should be a spacer between the clutch drum and the transmission front bearing race.but everyone and the manual say there is no spacer there. I cannot explain it any other way. HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

    Sounds like a fun winter project. I have a service manual for that model - so if ya need any specs as u progress, let me know - and remember - the threads on the trans sproket are reverse,,,,,

    Ralph - I dont see how the clutch can go too far into the case. It sounds like u have the starter jackshaft already installed. The primary chain, clutch, comepensationg sproket and adjuster are installed as an assembly. Is the clutch bottming out ?

    No its not - thats the correct order ..... I'm havinf trouble visualizing the problem. The splines of the hub line up with the splies on the shaft, which makes it tough to do it wrong. Did u take the clutch pack apart? Did u replace the clucth hub retaining ring ?

How do you remove starter motor on 1986 Harley Davidson Softail Custom


First, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL!!!!

Drain primary fluid, remove outer primary cover.
On the bolt holding the starter gear on, flatten the tab on the lack washer, and remove the bolt.
I use a flat blade screwdriver behind the gear, and hold it out to engage the teeth of the clutch shell to keep it from turning while undoing bolt.
If you're completely removing starter, undo the wiring going to it.
If you just need to move it a little out of the way, you might be able to leave the wires attached.
Remove two bolts holding starter to back side of inner primary cover.
Pull starter out, turning as necessary to clear.

For a 2008 Road King (same basic engine), they're (I assume you mean the 6 bolts that attach the Rocker Arm Cover) 15-18 ft/lbs.

By the way, they're two different length bolts (3 short, 3 long), so make a note of what goes where.

The trans lube is the same as the primary lube. As long as the primary fluid is touching the bottom of the clutch basket with the bike sitting upright, you are good. You will have to remove the clutch (derby) cover on the primary cover to check the oil level.

How to take a starter off a 1995 Harley Davidson heritage softail


Remove the primary cover. Remove the small bolt at the end of the starter. From the right side of the bike, remove the two bolts holding the starter to the back side of the primary housing. This job is much easier if you remove the oil tank to get at the starter bolts, but I have done it with the oil tank in place, by using long ball allen wrenches. Always replace the locking tabs at the end of the starter when replacing the starter, or removing it from the bike for any reason,

Need to know how to adjust the primary chain on the harley davidson


Remove the small access plate on the primary cover. Inside you'll see the primary chain adjuster and shoe. Loosen the bolt and slide it up or down to adjust the chain. Moving the shoe up tightens the chain. Adjust the chain so that you've got between 5/8 and 7/8 in up and down movement at the middle of the upper run of the chain with the engine cold.

Adjust primary chain on a harley davidson motorcycle


after safely supporting rear wheel off ground, remove small inspection cover from primary cover. rotate rear wheel until primary chain is at tightest point. cold engine- chain free play should be 5/8" - 7/8", hot engine should be 3/8" - 5/8". to adjust, loosen primary chain adjuster shoe nut (bolt head is similar to a carriage bolt-square head), sometimes you will need to tap bolt end to free up adjuster, as it sits in grooces to hold at desired level. adjust to desired tension and tighten bolt to 22-29 ft/lbs. then recheck chain freeplay after rotating rear wheel at least one full revolution. If OK, reinstall cover.

yes, the jackshaft in the primary. Drain the primary case. Remove the outer primary cover. Just above the clutch assembly, you'll see the jackshaft. There is a small bolt with a bend tab lockplate under it. Remove this bolt and your starter will come off.

here goes oil bag takes 2.8 with new filter Harley says 3 but that will overfill. Primary takes Harley Primary and trannie Oil primary takes 32 oz or one bottle...trannie takes between 20 and 24 oz. I always put in 20 oz and thqt will work fine...make sure your bike is up to operating temp when draining your oil so it all flows.

General spec is 8 ft lbs. 16 ft lbs then 90 deg turn. the pattern is the key. follow the pattern in the manual
