Hi,

Could be the idle as you suspect or technically air/fuel mixture, but that could mean a number of possibilities:

  • vacuum leak;
  • clogged jets, air jets, idle air holes and butterfly;
  • clogged/faulty air filter;
  • faulty/leaking/unfitted airbox;
  • unbalanced carbs.
The common denominator is carb work. They have to be brought down and a thorough cleaning performed. I will initially rule out any electrical problem including the plugs since you did not mention any rough idling.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

99 Honda Fourtrax will not stay running with choke off. Would this just be a idle adjustment?

No it is not an idle adjustment. You need to remove the carb, and remove both jets ( pilot jet and main jet). Ream the jets with thin wire or compressed air. Hold the jets up to the light and make sure you can see thru them. I believe you will find your pilot jet to be clogged.

Why won't my FeatherLite FL-20C weed eater will not stay running when I put it in full choke. What could be wrong?

It should run ok after warming up. After starting it, let it run for a minute or so and then try gradually opening the choke. You might try increasing the throttle setting at the same time. After the motor is hot, if you have to have the throttle setting increased in order to keep it running it means the idle setting needs to be increased, usually by turning a screw to keep the fuel valve from closing so much, or that there is a problem with the fuel flow......like a clogged jet or fuel passage in the carb.

455 rancher runs with chock out 15 second and dies

Try opening the choke half way as soon as it starts then all the way open in a few seconds... It only needs the choke to start and should run fine in less than a minute after idleing with the choke not engaged...

I have a Tomos a35 Sprint and I put a 70cc cylinder jug on it, a techno circuit pipe and I have a new carb. I up jetted it to a #58 and it starts only when the choke is down, once I take the choke off it...

You need to adjust the idle 1st.Main jet #58 is just for wide open throttle. Start by turning air screw all the way in "gently" till it stops, and back it out 1 and a half turns. Back out idle screw until slide is closed " not touching slide" . Turn until just contacts slide plus 1 full turn in opening slide. Start it up with the choke on and turn the air screw slowly in or out and slowly move the choke off till you can get it to run with the choke off. Than adjust idle screw " the one that moves the slide up and down to set the RPM. If you cant get her to idle with the choke off and the carb is air tight on the intake manifold. Carb might be to big. If you can get her to idle but it runs ruff I will try to help you tune the carb further. Good luck.

Yamaha vstar 650 wont run without choke on

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt. Those tiny jets will clog easily and need to be replaced. The diaphragm is also a large part of bogging and dieing. Hope this helps.
