First make sure that the bystarter is indeed functional: look at it, it should move when powered. Simple test to confirm that: remove the screws that hold the unit into the carb, and lift the choke slightly out of the carb body while cranking the engine : if it runs, then the carb is ok, choke is not. If necessary remove the air filter, put your hand in front of the carburetor to choke it even more and then start the motor.
If the engine dies even now then the problem is in the carburetor: either the idle is badly adjusted or the level in the bowl is too low.

I have a 1986 honda shadow 500 vt,and im leaking fuel out of the passenger side overflow tube comin from the passenger side carburator. can anyone give me any ideas why this is happening?

Check to see the float inside that carb is not all gummed up. This happens if you don't use fuel stabilizer. You should remove and clean.

I ride a 1986 shadow 500 with 32000 miles. recently it started acting up. the rear cylinder cuts out as i ride and it can last for several miles before it picks back up. At the same time, the RpM display...

You need to check for spark when the back cylinder is not firing to see if that is the problem...from there it will be easier to troubleshoot...also check for vacuum leaks.

1999 Honda Shadow 1100 runs but won't rev up. What's the problem?

Please check the carb and clean the jet and various nozzles as it seems that there is not enough fuel reaching the engine. May be the fuel filter is clogged. If so, then it needs replacement. Do that.

Need to adjust my honda shadow 500 vt carburator's fuel/air mixture

start by synchronizing your throttle plates. Honda calls the next step the "idle drop procedure". u need to know if you have fuel adj. screws or air adj. screws. fuel screws will be on engine side of carb slide, air screws will be on airbox side of carb slide. start leaning out mixture, (turn in fuel screw, turn out air screw. idle will increase so keep adjusting idle back to spec.after each turn if needed. Adjust about 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time on each carb until there is no change in idle, then richen up mixture by one half turn. If u sync throttle plates first then follow this procedure, there should be no hesitation when you "blip" the throttle, and after revving it should return to idle smooth,

Carbuerator

Wow , its been a while since I have seen one of those.
The carbs have to be calibrated on those. To insure same airflow and so on. But as I remember the rear cylinder does run a little hotter on those, seems it doesn't get the air that the front one gets. And over time it runs a little hotter. The v45 and the 700 Vulcan had the same trouble in those years.
