Question about 2005 Honda FMX 650

Overheating What happens when a bike overheats? Does it automatically kill the engine? Will the engine restart before it has cooled enough? I was accelerating onto the freeway and the engine just shut off. When I pulled over and tried to restart the engine, it wouldn't start. There was still power and when I hit the start button the light would dim showing me that current was being drawn by the starter. But the engine didn't even try to turn over. About an hour later, the bike started fine (after I moved the bike home in the truck...) Later I noticed that the coolent was a little low and was wondering if overheating could cause this problem. Otherwise it seems to be something electrical, like a short somewhere.

If you did indeed overheat the engine to the point that is stuck, you would probably know it by the antifreeze being poured all over the ground. The bike would be really hot just sitting on it. It would smell like antifreeze and just smell hot.. I know, smell hot? but an engine that has been ran to hot has a pretty distinctive hot smell... It doesnt sound like an overheating situation if none of the above happened. A bike that is overheating will begin to loose power before it stops. LIke lacuna said, everything inside of the engine will start to expand from the heat and the piston will stick in the cylinder. Most of the time when this happens, the bike will cool off and restart. But, usually with problems. Warped or cracked head, cracked block, broken piston rings. These engines are aluminum and dont like to be overheated and warp really easy. If the engine is really hot, it will not turn over until it cools down enough. Im not saying it couldnt have overheated and then restarted without any problems, its happened before, but just not likely. But, if this is the case, take lacunas advice and change all of the fluids. Your oil will be nasty. Maybe get ahold of the previous owner and see if it has had any probems. It kinda sounds electrical to me. as long as the above overheating signs didnt happen. If you dont think it was overheating and it happens again, try to push start the bike to see if the engine turns over. even putting the bike in second or third gear just see if you can move the bike back and forth. If nothing else, you'll at least know its not locked up.

How can I get my Jeep started after overheating it?


Sounds like a blown head gasket. That too will overheat the cooling fluid and press it out. But after the engine stops, toy won't get enough compression to start again. Consult a tech(firm)

Car won't start


old post , no year car, 1989 to 2002
there are 3 engines, 2 up to 1998. all made by toyota
overheating is it,
forget all else. FIND reason for overheating, coolant lost top list.
if loosing coolant that is #1 above all else. find cause.
but
overheating KILLS all ENgines. if not cured fast.
warps heads
is it pinging? that too kills engines.
your engine should never overheat unless it has cooling problems or.

unless the head is warped now, it will overheat, due to coolant loss
is it loosing coolant every hour or day?
CRANKING ALL ENGINES THAT DONT START DRAINS ALL BATTERIES, IT'S NOT a SYMPTOM IT'S NORMAL FOR NOSTARTS. (starter sucks 100 amps from battery every try)


id do a compression test first.
look for coolant in these spots
1: pavement below car.
2: passenger foot wells. (heat core leaks)
3: low radiator at neck cold show no coolant seen there.
4: in the a/t transmission, turns AFT to chocolate milk.
5: water in the engine oil pan, and or the reverse.
oil in the radiator, or side tank.
do all you can to not overheat any engine, and keep the repair bill like 1/3 or less. of BOOM

Engine overheating


What model/type is your bike?
Is it water or air cooled?
Does it have a cooling fan?
Does it overheat when in motion or only in very slow traffic?
What indication do you have that it's overheating?

The solution will depend on the answer to these questions.

Bike starts and runs but when it warms up (running for about 20 30 minutes) it won't start back up until it cools down...and it's not running hot...can you please assist me


Overheating. The raditor coolant or the cooling fan is'nt working corectly the engine should be as hot as it's going to get in 5 minutes then the therostae opens to start keeping it at the same temperture if the coolant or the fan can't keepit at this temperture it'll not restsate till it's cool enough to be in the safe range agin. Some times not changind the oil often enough can case this problem too low coolant and the fan not working all can cause this after finding the coolant system problem and fixing it change the oil as it'll be ruiened from the overheat. Low speed hotrodding and stop and go traffic can trash the oil and just a few hot runs acan make it need and oil change as the oil fails at high tempertures and the oil is an important part of the cooling system as it's cooler beng clean and in the air flow. As the oil cooler doesn't have the benifit of a fan sitting running and hotrodding at low speeds will heat and kill the oil then after the oils killed then it'll overheat case the oils bad.

It is overheating in 32 degree weather.....I have checked to see if my radiator is gettign enough anti freeze and it's fine but i dont know why it keeps overheating


The engine overheat is due to inefficient cooling. Therefore, there is coolant in the radiator but if it doesn't circulate inside the engine water-jacket to remove the heat generated from combustion's chambers, then it still causes overheat. If this keeps happening then it can cause the engine head wrapped then leaking from the gasket as people called blowed head gasket. It could be: 1- Thermostat is not opened. 2- Water pump is not working. Before starting to replace parts, it needs to verify it it is the root cause of the problem. Take out the thermostat and run the engine to feel if there is water flowing inside the upper hose. A- If it is not then water pump is not working. B- If is, then run the car a few days without thermostat to see if it causes overheated. C- Running car without thermostat still causes overheat then there are some clogging up in the water jacket defeating the cooling efficiency--> Need a good flush. Good luck.

My 1995 toyota avalon is overheating. When this happens, antifreeze fills up my reservoir container, even when I didn't put that much antifreeze in it.


Check to see if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

Why can a small carburetor cause and engine to overheat?


A carburettor is chosen by the volume of the venturi on it. A small carburettor will not be able to supply a rich enough mixture. Evaporating gasoline, just like alcohol rubbed on your skin, takes out heat as it turns to vapour (that's evaporative cooling). If there isn't enough gasoline evaporating in the engine, the engine overheats. So, choose a carburettor that is at least big enough for the engine it feeds. As engine displacement is fixed, what changes is the amount of gas the carburettor can feed, hence, a small carburettor supplies a too little volume of a too lean mix.
