Clacky engine on Gpz 500

Anyone got any ideas on a "clacky" gpz, the oil and filter has been changed, no loose parts i can see on the engine, theres just a very pronounced clacky noise, which reduces when the engine has been running for 30/40 miles, don't know if its a worry or just a characteristic of gpz500's

Hi This is a common problem with most older Kawasaki Bikes. The cam chains are well know to rattle a bit. It does usually get quieter after its up to a good running temperature.

Had the same problem. Changed The Oil And Used Some Good Semi-synthetic Which Has Eased It A Little, It Doen't Sound So Rough Now, But I Have Been Told To Definately Get The Cam Chain Checked! Reply With Quote

Hi, I had the same problem (Though GPZ750 1985) with a timed ticking sound, though mine is silent to start with and louder as it warms up. have been told this happened quite a lot with Kawasaki engines (hence the nickname "sewing machines" ), This is called "knocking" or "pinking" and could be down to a few things. A carbon build up in the combustions chamber, this can be removed either with a fuel additive or removed by hand. Spark plugs heat ranges incorrect causing premature detonation, or improper fuel to air mix leading to cylinder to run hot also causing premature detonation. Having blocked injector/s would also cause an imbalance, so it kinda take a pick and start knocking them of the list.

How often do I need to service my kawasaki GPZ 500 2004 reg?

It really depends on the anual mileage you do and riding conditions.
On average once a year is about right with normal oil, tyres etc checks in between.

Sometimes not always - puff of smoke when starting ( light colour) followed by lumpy tickover and noisey clacky sound from engine - all becomes ok when warm

I suspect smoke is just condensation in exhaust from suiting overnight. The other descriptions sound like it needs an oil change (noisy clacky) and lumpy starting sounds like dirty battery cables - clean them top and bottom. ??- When was last "healthy" tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters? I'd start there.
