I change my oil (Shell Rotella T 15W-40) and filter (Wix) every 3k miles. My oil capacity is stamped on my case by my sight glass. Check owner's manual.

Usually the recommended oil for your car is in the owners manual or you can go to the auto parts store and they can tell you

What type of oil do you recommend and what size oil filter does it take?

Use SAE 5w30 oil. I recommend Pennzoil but all major brands are good. You can use Synthetic or Conventional oil. If you use conventional oil change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles. If you use Synthetic change it every 8,000 miles. Anyplace that sells oil filters can tell you the correct filter. On your Pontiac I recommend you use an AC/Delco filter. Purolator, Wix, and Bosch are also excellent filters. The 4 cylinder uses a AC/Delco PF47 filter. The V6 uses a AC/Delco PF457G.

1987 4 runner wrong engine noises 100 miles after oil change. Oil was barely showing on dip stick and was black not leaking and didn't notice smoke in exhaust. Could I have burned 2 quarts of oil in 100...

Hi- sorry you're having problems.

Sadly I had this problem once and what it was is the place that changed the oil didn't put back in the right amount.
They claimed it was because of a misprint in the book they used to know how much oil the car needed but in reality they just messed up.
I suggest strongly they left the oil low if all is as you say because common sense tells us if the oil leak was that bad it would continue to be that bad.

They may have not even done the oil change. I would strongly suggest you take a witness with you and someone to perhaps speak for you [ to keep you calm] and insist they take responsibility.

Start lightly and simply tell them you are sure whom ever did the oil changed didn't do it properly. Maybe the owner or manager will take care of you this way. If not avoid this place at all cost.

Best of it

I have a 2006 Mazda Tribute. Can you tell me what the recommended time is between lube and oil changes. Is it 3000 miles or 5000. Thanks

It used to be every 3 months or 3,000 miles but some manufacturers are suggesting that 5,000 miles is ok. My view is that it does not hurt the motor having more oil changes. I continue to have them done every 3,000 miles myself even if my oil life indicator has not come on. Clean oil is very important to have a engine last for many miles. There are some full synthetic oils that can go for 5,000 or 7,000 miles beteween oil changes but cost alot more than the standard oil.

What type of oil is best to use?

Cheapest synthetic is better than the most expensive standard oil. Walmart offer full synthetic, 5-quart containers of 5W and 10W-30 oil for about 17 bucks.

Either of those weights will serve you well - for 6,000 miles or so.
If you want to run for 10,000 miles, then a Mobile 1 full synthetic for a bit over double the price will serve well.

Suggest that you NEVER allow someone to sell you oil by the quart. The mark up is silly.
Suggest that 4 quart containers are NOT for cars... No car takes 4 quarts.

Suggest that 5 quart containers are good for buying and discarding oil - also cheaper. Check your local Walmart... then check ANY other retailer. Let us know if you can beat the price and container size advantage offered by Walmart.

The oil light is blinking on a 98 honda accord and the oil is black when i check it....what does this mean?

Black oil needs to be changed immediately. It's possible that even if the oil level is full, it's so thin and worn that it's tripping your Oil Light due to lack of oil pressure.

Oil type

Ceryl, I would use the 20W50 oil only if the car is using oil. A lighter grade is better in most instances as the engine warms up faster - very important - and usually gets better gas mileage. Use a premium synthetic such as Mobil 1, or the Castrol brand. I would use 10W30 oil but it is best to always check your owner's manual for their recommendation.

Quick Question on MINI break-in period bmw

When I picked up my car. the very next day I went on a 800+ mile trip. During the trip, I made a mental note to vary my speeds between 50 and 90 and do frequent gear changes to keep the RPMs moving around... did my best to simulate city driving.

The oil change intervals are based upon your driving conditions. depending on which oil they use, it should be fine. My oil was drained in my car at 11k miles and it turned out to be in good condition.
