The centerstand makes it a lot easier. I really don't know whay they would say not to put it on the stand to change the oil Put it on the centerstand and change the oil it will be fine.

Hi, Jesse for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Suzuki, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one. What type of oil does 1997 Suzuki VS 800 take

Depends on the driving.
If you live where it is really cold ( it gets down to O degrees Fahrenheit), you should probably use a 5W-20.
If the lowest temperature you drive in is 32 degrees, 5W-30.
If you drive in above 50 degrees, you could use 10W-30.
These "weights" ( viscosities ) are standard for most gasoline vehicles.

I just bought a 96 GSX 750F and it didnt come with a manual. I need to change the oil but not sure what type of oil it takes or how much to put in.

You can try calling the local Suzuki service department and ask. They should be able to look up the information and let you know. This bike should also have an oil filter that you will need to change as well, so a stop by the dealer might be better. Try e-bay to see if you can find an owners manual or a service manual. If you have a motorcycle wrecking yard near you they might have an owners manual as well.

Good Luck!

SV650S Alternative Engine Oil

Suzuki recommends the use of SUZUKI PERFORMANCE 4 MOTOR OIL or an oil which is rated SF or SG under the API (American Petroleum Institute) classification system. The viscosity rating should be SAE 10W-40. If an SAE 10W-40 oil is not available, select an alternative according to the information below: -4°F - 86°F: 10W-30 -4°F - 104°F+: 10W-40, 10W-50 6°F - 104°F+: 15W-40, 15W-50 14°F - 104°F+: 20W-50 Engine life depends on oil amount and quality. Daily oil level checks and periodic changes are two of the most important maintenance itmes to be performed.
