Nothing worse than scratching something brand new....to save this happening after a resto or painting, take note of areas that are easily scratched whilst dismantling. IE: the motor has left scrapes on the frame when removing and will inevitabley do the same when re-fitting. Tape these areas with a cloth type bandage or tape before installation and remove them after.
Paint flaking of is cosmetic only,,,If you want to take the time too paint it,,youll need to clean the erea,,make shure there are no oils or other dirt on the motor,,If it needs to be sanded to smooth the surface so you dont have a dip in the paint then use 600grit,,,,re-clean the surface again,,,Use 500F engine enamel,,,Dont just do a little spot though as you really want too match your paint surfaces.
Go to any paint store that sells auto paint and have it matched up. I had them match up my faded Cougar and it was a perfect match, bought one qt no problem. I don't know the paint codes, but they have them. Hope this helps.
How much work as opposed to riding do you want to do? Pens are not the best choice but when you consider the time and money involved with prepping and painting for an invisible repair then they look much better. If you use a pen there are a couple things you can do to improve the end results. First, wet sand the chipped area. The idea is to smooth the edges of the chip. Second, Clean it then before you use any paint, build up a couple layers of primer. Primer is better at filling and will not shrink as much. Finally make sure that the area is as clean as possible. Then apply your paint. Don't be afraid to go higher then the surrounding paint. You will wet sand it again. Now depending on what kind of paint it is you will either touch it up with some clear or buff it out. Make sure you allow plenty of time between coats for drying. Good Luck.
WHAT YOU HAVE IS A CHEMICAL REACTION THIS USUALY HAPPENS WHEN CELULOSE IN THE PAINT ATTACKS USUALY ACRYLIC PAINT WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE ONLY THING I WOULD RECOMEND IS HAVING THE FRAME OLD PAINT EITHER BURNED OFF WITH A BLOW TORCH OR HAVING IT SHOT BLASTED AND POWDER COATED WICH IS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE AND IT IS FAR SUPERIOR TO HAND SPRAYING AND LASTS FOR A VERY LONG TIME WITH A TOUGH FINISH
