Question about 2005 Harley Davidson XL 883R Sportster

1 Answer

Electrical woes I have an '06 XL 883. All electrical components have been working fine since I got the bike about 4 months ago. I changed out the handgrips last night... this morning my electrical components are acting up. turn signals\ speedometer\ horn doesn't work. signal lights were on as well as the headlight until I used the low beam switch to test the umm.. switches. This disabled these lights for some reason... they no longer come on. tach still has juice as well as the nuetral light and such. Any ideas? Think I may have pinched somewires putting on the handgrips... just need to jimmy them around a bit? Are there fuses on these these things? Sorry for all the potentially newb questions but I had to jump in the truck and get to work. I didn't have any time to wrench on this to trouble shoot it. Figured someone on here may have some ideas that I will try once I get home tonight. thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Make sure you have not crimped the wires when you changed the grips

Check all fuses with an ohmmeter. Unplug and replug everything one at a time. Still problem, borrow a known good ECU and try it in your bike. Nothing electrical can be diagnosed by looking at it. You have to know the specs and test with a multi-meter at minimum. Invest in the shop manuals if you plan on working on your bike yourself.

Harley 883 belt price

I'm not sure. This site does not sell parts but the last one I installed on a bike in my shop cost over $100. But, that was quite a while ago. Try http://www.bikebandit.com

Good Luck

I want to remove the baffels from stock 06 Sportster mufflers

not a good idea unless you upgrade the air cleaner to a high flow or screaming eagle...bike is tuned to run with restricted pipes..if you change one you need to change the other..with the 06 you could also need a download or fuel management system..

chec fuses-test them even tho they may look good-inspec starter relay-think there was a current overload -look over wireing for burns etc

I have an 06 XL 1200 that just started choking out

This could be a variety of issue's from over choking, to bad fuel. Make sure your not leaving the choke on to long, as this can foul the plugs. Bad fuel could cause this, as water or other contaminents get into the float bowl and don't affect the enrichment ports due to fuel bypassing the float bowl. This would lead to the bike running worse as the enrichment knob is pushed back in. Last but not lease, could also be an electrical related issue due to the bike warming up and causing a short or open as stuff expands. I would change your plugs, then drain the float bowl into a clear glass jar to examine contents. if fuel and spark seems ok, you will have to look at electrical. plug wires, crank shaft position sensor, coil. It may take someone with the tools to test these components in order to diagnose the issue. If you see that the tach (if you have one) or lights in your display's flicker, it could also be battery related. loose ground. Many possibilities.
