Question about 2006 Harley Davidson XL 883C Sportster Custom

Rear brake pads

Installed new pads on the rear of an 05 sporty, a bit challanging but everything seemed to line up fine, I think. Went to flush out the old fluid and had a difficult time getting the old out. The fluid would come in small amounts and not flow freely. After a few hours of pumping and using a vacuum pump the new fluid started coming through. Bleed it a few more times to make sure all air was out, peddle still doesn't feel right and the pads will not retract from the rotor. When I push in on the caliber the piston does move. Is there still more air in the lines, bleeder valve bad,Pad spring slip?

    replaced master cylinder and brakelines, but not the calipers. After bleeding the system I still have no brakes. I used a vacuum bleeder, then afterwards just a long see through line. No air, just fluid.

When you removed the old pads, did you wipe the exposed pistons with clean brake fluid? When you pushed them back into their bores, you may have shoved all the dirt and debris in with them and they are now binding up the works. The front brake pads burnt and after replacing pads and calipers during bleeding the back lines have no problems. the front lines wont even push much air, and no sign of fluid, what should i do now?


Have you left the cap off the brake reservoir whilst bleeding procedure.if the cap is on between bleeding it won't allow fluid to flow out of bleed nipple.if it is still blocked then it sounds like the lines / pipes have debris in them so need flushing through or replacing.

Should piston go all the way back where it is flush with piston outer housing?


Measure the thickness of the disc. It could be thin enough with the worn bads that the piston is coming out so far that it is binding in the bore.

Brakes went out


Have you checked the master cylinder for leaks and around the brake booster? You may have a bad brake light switch.

1999 Chevy Tahoe- Soft Brake Pedal


Try having the dealer flush and bleed your system. It is very hard to bleed ABS systems yourself and have safe brakes that still work afterward. Bleeding non-ABS brakes yourself is easy not the same for ABS brakes. Valving, sensors and what-not require a tech and the correct equipment in my opinion. You do it wrong and you could ruin your ABS system. Do that and see if they firm up. I replaced my brake shoes/pads at the same time all new everything in back, drums/springs everything and new rotors up front. then I had the chevy dealer flush, refill and bleed system. Stiffer pedal and brakes work better. Keep in mind the brakes on 99 Tahoes are inaedequate, require new rotors often, heat up and fade/glaze pads regularly. I replace my pads long before they wear down because they glaze up and start fading early. I'll rough em up once maybe, next time, new ones. Every two brake jobs, new rotors for me. Just how it is. They will stiffen a bit and work better but they will never be awesome brakes. Just how it is on 99 and earlier Tahoes. Hope it helps. Very important to bleed correctly though. I'll bleed my 83 Toyota 4x4 myself but not the Tahoe.

Stuck Brake Pad Pins


I suggest pulling the axle out a bit to allow the caliper assy more freedom of movement. Then see if you can get the pins out. If not, you can put something (like a piece of wood) between the pistons and the rotor on the outside and gently pump the pedal to see if that does in fact loosen the pins. But a more fundemental question: is the new floating rotor the EXACT diameter as the OEM (or whatever was on there) rotor? It sounds to me like the rotor is jammed against the pins. If it is the same size, are the new pads the same shape as the old ones (same profile on the metal backing)?

topped-up the fluid and put in new pads. The wheel spins OK when up on the stand and the brakes don't jam or even seem sticky when you try them with the back wheel off the ground —ie: calipers grip and open again as they should. But on the open road the pads still seem to rub just enough to generate a warm to hot disc. (And the pedal has the right amount of play before the brakes come on.) Since working over the caliper and re-bleeding the brakes etc it seems a bit better (no fading) but it still runs a little warm to hot. I'm wondering about a complete service for the rear Brembo popping the pistons out and changing the seals etc but before I do (and I have to say it all looks absolutely fine as it is), is there anything else I should be looking at / thinking of? The disc seems true and unwarped. I know there's some anxiety about getting the right type of Brembo pad for the rear brakes on these particular bikes. Some are too thick? The parts book says Frendo FD 72 GG 222, (Guzzi part no: 27 65 46 10) and the caliper itself is marked 204531.03 if that means anything. (Is this the P32 type?) The pads I have are supposed to be the proper Brembo ones with the code 98.5031.50. Is there something I don’t know about this? ,FWIW this was a problem with some Sportis when they were new, to the extent that I saw a couple with completely smoked rear brakes, overheated due to brake drag. Mine never did it, so I don't know the root cause. In at least one of the instances I saw, the dealer replaced the entire brake system under warranty. There was a separate and likely unrelated issue with rear brake disks that were machined with a step in the middle of the pad's foorprint on one side. At the time, I heard people attributing the brake drag problem to the disk problem, but I can't see a correlation. ,,,

Did you check the rotors to see if they were cracked or 'thin' ? Rotors sometimes get really thin with use.And they can crack. Or as in one case that I know of there was sand between the rotor and the pads. The pads were also new. Removed the gravelly sand and they worked fine.
