Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FLSTN- FLSTNI Softail Deluxe

2 Answers

Advice I'm still not 100% if I even want to go with a Harley but that's what I'm leaning towards now. I think I like the 70's XLCH Ironheads based on looks. I like the stripped down, little chrome look. Performance-wise I want something fast, reliable, that I can beat on pretty hard and it keep going, and if something were to go wrong parts would be cheap and easy to fix. I would love to beat a couple slower crotch rockets in a straight line. Other bikes I've looked at are the VMAX, fast but expensive parts, probably hard to work on, modify, and don't like the looks too much. Looked at the Honda shadow ACE 1100, sounds slower, looks nice, a 500 shadow was my first bike. Also found a yamaha virago 1100 for real cheap on craigslist so I've been looking a little at those. Basically, I want the best performing pre 2000's cruiser for the least amount of money, am I on the right track? Got some suggestions? lochenjons is offline Reply With Quote

No, you're not on the right track. An iron head Sportster, while they certainly have their charm, is not what you need if you want something with any semblence of reliability. Look for a 85-up Sportster instead and mod it up how you want it. Many already have 1200 kits in them. I don't know anything about those Japanese bikes. If that's your thing, you might just want to stick with them rather than buy a 30 year old iron head Sportster and forever tell the world of the problems you had.

You are definitely not on the right track.......heres my reasoning behind not owning a Harley Davidson that is between the years of 1969 thru 1981 Harley Davidson was actually owned by American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF), a longtime producer of leisure products......In those years they mass produced bikes and they simply had a lot of problems with them.......In February of 1981 13 executives from Harley signed to buy the company back and they official got it back in their control in June of that year.......The major mass product was stopped and they started to have quality bikes once again........do yourself a favor and stay away from the bikes made between 1969 and 1981 if you are going to get a Harley........My personal recommendation if you are looking to buy a bike that you want to customize and be very dependable and low cost maintenance would be to get a Honda and not a Harley........I know I know.......everyone wants a Harley and there is nothing wrong with that because i would like to have myself a nice Harley but the only problem with that is that maintenance and upgrade parts for them are twice as expensive as it is for any other bike unless your talking sport bike and Aprilia or ducati will kill ya with their prices

How con I cure the coughing and spluttering ?

Hi, Mick if you think the bike may have been sitting for a long period of time you may want to remove the carburetor and do a proper cleaning, popping or backfiring on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean. 2005 Electra Glide Classic CV. Why does the rear cylinder run lean?

Hi, Henrydodd200 the bike is set up lean at the factory for emmisions reasons and fuel mileage also the cylinder temperature is hotter in the rear cylinder because of blockage from the front cylinder, if you dont have an intake leak at the head you can correct this situation by going up 1 or 2 sizes on the main jet for more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please visit the websites below, and for specific information or questions, please feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. Hi, Wes I own a 1972 XLCH and the old iron head top ends expand too much when they get hot so what I do is adjust them when they are hot with a slight drag and it eliminates 100% of tappet noise sorry you can not find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley despair not, for a mere $10 you can download another one. 1971 FLH w/80 in. shovelhead. Why is it running lean on the rear cylinder and is very hard to start as a result?

Hi, Adam based on your info my first guess would be your main jet is too small but the lean rear cylinder would not cause a hard start situation you may have a weak battery or a faulty starter I am sorry you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley Davidson but despair not for a mere $10 you can download another one. Why does my 2011 Harley Davidson Road king dashboard light speedometer light stay on

Hi Henry, you could have a faulty ignition relay located behind the left side cover, try removing it to see if dash lights go out, if they do replace the relay. Hi Anonymous, as long as the bike starts and runs ok, I wouldn't worry too much could be just a minor wire connection starting to go south. For more information about your question, please visit the websites below. Good luck and have nice day. xlch@mail.com

1997 Harley Davidson sportster 1200 stops running after it gets hot. Think it stops getting fuel after it is hot.

Hi Tamles1973, you can easily confirm your fuel question by removing your air cleaner and watch for a squirt of fuel into the carb throat by twisting the throttle when it gets hot. I would lean more towards you ignition coil and loose connections. Inspect it for cracks if you find any replace the coil. Next do a resistance check on the coil with an ohm meter. Primary resistance where the wires connect should be 2.5 to 3.1 ohms, seconday resistance where the spark plug cables connect should be 10,000 to 12,500 ohms, anything outside these parameters replace the coil. If you are still having problems you can reach me at xlch@mail.com Good luck and have nice day.

Your bike is running hot because the fuel air mixture is lean. You need to take it to a shop that has a dyno and an exhaust gas analyzer and have them adjust the fuel air mixture down to about 13.5:1. Now, it's not just a simple turn of a screw somewhere. I'm not a Twin Cam mechanic. I work on the older bikes that the dealers won't touch anymore like Shovelheads, Panheads, Ironheads, and I do work on Evos. No Twinkies. But, I've seen this done even on Evos with carbs. You may have to purchase some electronic device or something but that's the only way I know to cool the engine down. EPA regs causes things like this.
