Question about 2004 Ducati 998 S Final Edition

Weird 998 problem

My 998 has an interesting problem. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. After filling up at a gas station, the bike will frequently crank but not start. A quick opening of the gas tank lid cures the problem. My theory is that the vent opening on the cap and the rubber vent tube are not lining up properly. BTW, it never has fuel starvation while running.

I think your theory sounds pretty accurate or one of the vents is just clogged.

I ran out of gas and now car wont start

You should look for a gas container, go to the nearest gas station, fill it, get back to your car and por the content of your gas container in the refill point of your car. If you don't have a gas container available, maybe you can buy one at the gas station.
Actually make, model and year of your car makes no difference to solve thei sad issue.
Some gas stations won't sell you gas in a container. In this case you should call a towing service and take your car to the gas station.

I am trying to figure out how to put air in a presta valve. The tire is just a little flat but we couldn't seem to fill it at the gas station. I think the bike may have been used when we bought it.

You can not fill a presta valve at a gas station because the valve is too small for the hose. The hose at a gas station is made to fit a schrader valve.

I would like instructions on how to drain the carb for winter storage

Please do this: Get a fuel stabilizer such as StaBil, from your auto parts or motorcycle shop place. Go to the gas station, put the amount of stabilizer required in yourf tank, then fill the tank. Go for a little ride. When you get home, turn off the fuel valve. Let the engine run until it stop (runs out of gas). Store your bike in a cool, dry place.

You don't mention any other symptoms so I will assume the electronics, ie speedometer, tach, and such, did't start acting weird? If that is the case check your grounds these old rigid mount sportsters are known for vibrating the grounds loose.

998 Top Speed?

998 is a great bike... they arn't super fast top speed is 162mph and its gear limited not electronically limited. It will take you a while to get to 162mph quarter mile is 11.5 sec @ 135mph, so I'd guess, 15 sec or so too 162mph, from a stop. You can get a modern-day corvette to do better,,,

Difficulty starting

darn thing wouldnt start after I fueled it up. After sitting for 10 min it fires right up and runs great. When starting cold it fires right up with no prob. Someone told mevapor lock is my issue this sound right ? and if so what is vapor lock and how do I prevent it ? thx all for your support.,The vapor lock situation happened to me a few times with my 748, so it CAN happen. To test this theory, just fill your tank to 1/2 of what it normally holds, next time you fill it. Or pop the cap off right now and let it sit for 10 minutes and close it back up again. Al your doing is releasing the pressure on the system. Will this do any good? Well, had always been filling my tank too high and once I realized that popping the gas cap, would release the pressure, I never had a problem after.,,,
