Question about 2004 Ducati Monster 620 Capirossi

1 Answer

Starter problems I've got an '03 Monster 620. A couple weeks ago I went to start the bike up. Turned the key, fuel pump primed, gauges flip on, but when I hit the starter button, nothing happens. I checked and charged the battery, tried replacing the ignition relay underneath the gas tank - still no ignition. Then I replaced the starter relay on the right side of the bike - again, no ignition. As I was swapping out the starter relay, I did, however, notice that the ignition fired up when the two leads on the relay were crossed - kill switch and key were both turned to the ON position. I discovered this by accident, and my guess at the time was that by short circuiting the starter relay, I was bypassing the ignition switch. The bike sounded fine, so I decided I'd attempt to at least get it to the shop and avoid the towing charges. A couple miles into the ride, the bike overheated (260 degrees) and died at a stop light. Now if I try to start using the method I stumbled upon by accident (i.e. place a wrench across the two terminals of the starter relay), the ignition will turn over, but won't start. I have no clue where to go from here, and I'm not sure if the overheating was related to the starter problem. It's going into the shop this weekend. At this point, I'm just wondered if I did something really stupid and made the problem worse. Insight would be appreciated if anyone has had a similar experience. Thanks.

Wow, same problem exactly. I have an 02 m620, and I think it may be an immobilizer problem. I've tried resetting the computer with the red key to no avail. The shop suggested I take a look at the started solenoid. After that I'm going to try to bump start it and take it in to the pros, as nothing I'm doing seems to be working,

Well what you did there was start it but the fans still need the ignition switch to turn on all the electronics. for the starting problem, check the wiring from the battery to the relay. or even the actual ignition switch in the bars. see if the button is bad, that has been a small problem if the internal workings in the button get coroded or get miss aligned.

Sometimes when i turn the key my fuel pump will not start

Do not touch the throttle till it fires. Only the choke, which is the primer for the start up fuel. The throttle does nothing till the engine is running. Your problem sounds like a weak battery. If it is like mine, I have been wrestling with a slow starter for years, the battery is tiny. And even a brand new one is slow. I have replaced the battery 3 times in 8 years.
I know you can check the pressure of the fuel pump, but if it is humming, it should be working. It comes on with the key and it stays on. Don't forget, you are fuel injected, 30lbs pressure, min, or something like that. Hope this helps, 2002 S4, 1999 750 monster.

2002 monte carlo fuel gauge doesnt work, pump works ok.

It is likely the fuel level sending unit. I had a customer with an 03 Monte Carlo that the pump went out and the fuel gauge hadn't worked in about a year. We replaced the fuel pump module and it took care of both problems. I believe the sending unit is available separately from the complete module.

My 2004 Monster 620 cockpit doesn't light up when I turn the key.

Sounds like you're using a black key that has a damaged chip, so the ICU will not recognized it and has immobilized the bike. Use the red key, or the spare black key if you have it. If you don't have a spare, scrounge the internet for various work arounds, otherwise it's a very costly repair.
