Question about 2005 Ducati 749 R

749 stalling It was the dealers demo bike, and had 1,000 miles on it, and they did the 1st service on it the day I picked it up. Runs really well except for one thing: It can sit and idle for hours without stalling, but many times, at the very instant you crack the throttle, it stalls. Does not matter if the clutch is in while in gear, or out while in neutral. Does not matter if you crack it ever so slowly, or give it a big blip. The warmer the bike, the more likely it is to happen. At 205 deg, it's about 1 out of 3 stop lights or stop signs when it dies. At 180 deg, its more like 1 in 10. My idle speed looks to be about 1200, and it idles smooth and the speed is constant. When I start the bike cold, I don't really need the fast idle to keep it running. I have seen a similar post where 2 people say that theirs was fixed by adjusting the idle speed from 1000 up to 1100 (I don't think I need that) and by having the "Cams degreed". I don't really know what that means, but I am guessing it means changing the timing of the cam shafts, so that the valves start opening sooner, or later, relative to TDC. Seems like a bad thing to do, as the cam timing would seem to be set for good power at higher RPMs, and moving it to cover up some other problem wouldn't be the right answer. My guess would be that when I crack the throttle, air flow is increased, but the fuel injection is too slow to keep up with it, and the lean mixture is kiling me. Any opinions on why this is happening? Or about the merits of cams timing changes? Experiences and fixes? thanks

You dealer should be able to fix this, probably under warrenty. I believe it's a TPS setting change. I "cured" mine by raising the idle, but it's gotten way better with miles. 15k now and it rarely stalls. These motors are pretty tight. Also, if I may, you still need to use the fast idle lever when cold starting...the slightly increased revs gets oil to the top end sooner, thus saving wear and tear on your valvetrain.

I have a 2003 Ducati 749. Brilliant bike that I bought a few months ago. It has a noisy crancase upon start-up. The noise dissapears when the clutch-lever is engaged.

2009 650 Classic: Does not stay in gear, problem getting 1st gear at times. When I bought the bike 1 month ago the problem was there. I returned the bike to Bobby J's in Albuquerque, NM. The service dept....


Wish I could come up with a line of B.S. as good as their service department does. You have a slightly bent shift fork. Tell the jerks to fix it. It is a problem, it is not right, and it is covered under warranty. Tell them you really don't want to get creamed when the bike pops out of gear and doesn't want to go back into gear as a cement truck is coming at you. If you let them stall you until the warranty runs out it will cost you around $1400.00 to get it fixed. Contact the Regional manager for Yamaha ASAP. What I am afraid will happen is that the dealer will do the repair and install a new shift fork then tell you they could not find anything wrong so you now owe them the cash because Yamaha will not stand the repair cost for a non-existent problem. Send Yamaha a certified letter as to your concerns and insist someone other than the dealer inspect the bike to confirm the problem. Keep a copy of the letter and the postal receipt. Is there another dealer in the area?

The diagram below shows how a shift fork moves a slider gear left and right to change gears. A slightly bent shift fork would not let the slider gear "dogs" fully engage into 1st gear.

749 Starting Problem


I don't think there's anything wrong with your bike. I'm assuming that all the required services have been done and you have a good battery. The **9 bikes absolutely require a good strong battery. If you don't already have one get and use a battery tender. It will save you a lot of headaches with a weak battery. As for the starter speed, the 749 turns over S-L-O-W-L-Y. It's normal, if you're use to other makes it sounds like it won't start but it will. The Fast Idle lever, not a choke, once you start the bike, let it idle about 2000 RPM or so until the coolant temp gage stops flashing, then you can slowly back the lever to minimum, if you if you just push the lever back fast it drops the idle too fast and it will die. When it's not fully warm and you have a stock injection map it runs a little lean and will be cold blooded until fully warm. The occasional stall on a cold morning is not unusual even on a properly set up bike. I normally on cool mornings keep my fast Idle lever up until I'm either on a highway/freeway or a five or so miles in town before I turn it full off. She can be a real bitch to start if she's only a little warm, not cold/not hot, I really don't know why but mine does the same thing. I give it a minute and try again and she'll fire. All this goes away once she's fully warmed up. Once you get the knack of it you'll be fine, I don't even really have to think about it anymore.

i'm about to purchase a 03 749 w abt 4000miles. mostly stock except for some CF add-ons. used to ride a monster400(yes they do have 400cc monsters!) back in my country and the maintenence wasn't costly. was just wondering if you guys could offer me some advise mostly abt cost of maintenence. i would love to be mentally prepared for the costs involved..(tried to find these info in the forums but couldnt really get a definite answer) 1)i understand the 6K service would be up soon. any rough estimates on the cost of it? 2) is it about the same for the 12k service? 2) is the 6K and 12 K service(and so on every 6K) the only major ones the 749 need? 3)in between these how often should i send her for a regular servicing? (change of engine oil, spark plugs, etc)? any help would be truly appreciated and cant wait to get back on a ducati!,First piece of advice, use the search function on this forum. You will be flamed otherwise. This question has been asked a million times. The cost of servicing a Ducati will depend on the state of the bike. Generally, however, all interval services between 6000 and 12,000 miles will cost the same as any Japanese four. The major services, and this includes the 6000 and 12000 services will generally cost you between $600-$1200. This is a ball park figure, as this depends: (a) on the honesty of the mechanic; and (b) things like the valve clearance and age of the belts and the general condition of the bike. As you have a 2003 749 with 4000 miles, expect the next service to be at the higher end of the scale because the bike will have to have the belts, fluids, valves and everthing checked or changed. This is because Ducati specify their maintenance schedule in terms of X,000 miles or 2 years, whatever comes sooner. This schedule is repeated throughout the bikes life and as time goes will come to include such things as the forks, etc. I suggest that you do not skimp on any of this. However, Ducati's and especially the 749/999 bikes are not ticking reliability time bombs. If you look after your bike it will last you for many years to come, providing a fantastic ownership experience along the way. I hope this is of some help.,,,
