Question about 2001 BMW R 850 GS

1 Answer

Battery issue

I have abmw r 850. When I turn on the headlights when I ride, it drains the battery. I checked the generator and it is putting out 13.5 volts. Replaced the voltage regulator after testing it also to make sure that this wasn't the problem. Bike still isn't charging the battery when running the headlights. Battery keeps a charge if I don't turn on the lights. Goes dead after about 50 miles of riding. Well...not completely dead but not enought to start the bike again with the electric starter. I have been through my repair manual several times to try to figure this problem. Any suggestions PLEASE. I have a friend with a 74 sporty with the same problem. Dealership won't even look at it because they can't understand the problem either.

If you have a volt-ohm meter check for voltage draw and grounds and shorts. Put the meter on the VDC scale remove either the pos or neg wire from the battery, then connect one lead to the wire and the other lead to the battery post where the wire was removed, you should have 2 volts or less, next remove both wires from the battery, set ur meter on ohms scale R1, you should have a high ohm reading between both wires, and probe the pos wire and the other probe to a frame ground, you should have infinity or high ohm readings. If you do have a short curcuit check the wiring that goes thru the handlebars, while leaving the meter hooked up, dissconnect one wire at a time untill the ground goes away. You can also do this with a test light, remove one battery post and hook up a test light in a series curcuit, if the light lights up, you have a short curcuit. Dissconnect wires untill the light goes out, then trace that wire see if its damaged. The older HD's had a problem with the wiring thats routed inside the handlebars.

Battery draining on suzuki S83 boulevard - can ride it for a couple of hours then it just cuts out

Sounds like you need to check the generator and charging circuit.

The bike will start and run on the battery alone until it is drained.

Once a bike has been started the battery power is taken over by the generators power this also replenishes the power lost in the battery when the bike is initially started. If the generator does not generate power the bike will continue to us the power from the battery until it is exhausted and will therefore stop.
A simple test is to turn the bike ignition on and turn the headlamp on (check the brightness of the lamp) Start the bike and re check the brightness of the head lamp, it should be a little brighter if the generator is working. Another test is carried out with the use of a voltage tester (multi meter). Set on dc volts test the batteries voltage eg 12vdc, start the bike and re test the voltage should be around 13 - 14v dc if the charging circuit is working

Headlight will not stay on?

Hi, Anonymous if your headlight is not working, keeps burning out, blinking, or is dim the first thing you need to check is the headlight bulb for damaged filaments then check your light circuit fuse, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ground or power supply wire to headlight bulb socket.
2. Worn, chaffed, or broken wires in the light circuit.
3. Corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets in wire connectors.
4. Faulty hi/lo beam switch.
5. Faulty ignition switch.
6. Fuse is good but no continuity on both sides.
7. Faulty wiring between battery positive and headlight bulb socket.
8. Weak charging alternator/generator.
9. Faulty voltage regulator/rectifier, overcharging.

Instrument Dashboard went dead but bike continued to run.

I would never think a bike was smart enough to shut down unneeded accessories like that but then again I haven't been around many newer ones much. I would just charge it ride it and see if it happens again. if you get done riding and the battery reads low again that should answer your question

Battery dies. I have a Venox and I put a volt meter on the battery and with the headlight unplugged, it reads 14 volts. But, when I plug the headlight in the volt meter reads 13 volts and the battery...

to check if the charging system is charging you also need an amp meter hook that inbetween the battery lead on the pos + side of the battery and with the engine running turn on all lights if the amp meter reads - charge its not charging the batery up,,change the reg first,, thats the chepest part,,,the charge will only just be above what you need with all lights on eg 1.5 - 2 amps

1998 valkrie wont turn over

Your battery is most likely the cause. The tail light and dash light do not draw much juice from the battery. However the headlight and starter are a different story. Are you absolutely sure you turned everything off before you took your break? If you are and you don't ride your bike a lot you should get a trickle charger for it. Use it when not riding. It will prevent you battery from completely losing it's charge thus protecting the battery.
If you do ride often then you should have the battery tested. You may need a new one. Remember that once a battery has been drained too low, permanent damage can occur.
